The Cruelcumber is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series that made its debut in Dragon Quest IX.
It is an anthropomorphic spear-wielding summer squash.

Interestingly, a bit of dishwater blonde hair extends from the tip of their stem, giving them a look reminiscent of the Chonmage, a traditional Japanese topknot hairstyle. Cruelcumbers have a rivalry with Orcs over who are the better spearmen, according to their bestiary entry in X.

At the start of the game, one Cruelcumber and two Slimes are fought off by the Hero and Aquila before they can threaten Erinn and her grandfather.
Dragon Quest X
Cruelcumbers began appearing in Version 5.0 of the game, this time being stronger than both their Zumeanie and Scourgette cousins by virtue of being introduced later in the game. They can perform Multithrust and lunging attacks with their spears, as well as being able to cast Oomph.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Now back to the first of its kind for the first time since its debut, they are one of the first monsters fought by the Luminary on his quest. This monster does not have a vicious, nor a malicious variant.
