The Medal King is a recurring non-player character in the Dragon Quest series. He first appeared in Dragon Quest IV and has appeared in all subsequent main series games, as well as many side series games. Early on, he was simply referred to as the 'Medal King', or 'King who collects small medals'. However, in later games and remakes, each king is usually given a specific name.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
The Medal King, who goes by the name of Minikin in the modern English localization of Dragon Quest IV, made his first appearance in this game. In the remakes, one of the inhabitants of Pioneer Town claims to be his wife. He inhabits Minikin's Dominion, found on an island in the north-eastern corner of the map.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The Medal King was given the name Dominicus in the modern English localization of this game. He inhabits Dominicus' Dominion, found on a lone island at the south of the world map.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
The Medal King Medford is sealed away in the Isle o' Smiles by the Dread Fiend Jamiras. When he is saved by the player, he will inform them that he'll be waiting at Medford's Manor (found west of Haggleton in the Upper World).
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The Medal King (known as Maximo in the modern English localization) was given his own unique sprite in the original Playstation version, making it the first time a Medal King had his own unique graphic in the series. He inhabits King Maximo's Mansion, found in the present day Wetlock region after saving Wetlock in the past.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
The Medal King Maximillian resides in Princess Minnie's Castle. However, unlike in other Dragon Quest games, he does not collect the Mini medals, as he is very ill. In his stead, Princess Minnie collects the Mini Medals.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
The Medal King technically does not appear in this game - but a very similar character appears, named Cap'n Max Meddlin', who takes on the same role.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
While the Medal king does not make a physical appearence, he is a character intrinsically linked to L'Académie de Notre Maitre des Médailles. According to one of the books in the school's library, l'Académie was founded by a nameless mini medal-obsessed king from a distant land, who wished that his daughter would grow up loving them as much as he. Furthermore, according to a nearby slime, the shambled hut hidden under the well in the garden is the restive residence of a monarch similarly inclined (though considering how long monsters, including slimes, live its possible that this king and the founder are one and the same). Nowadays, many of the students of the Académie doubt the veracity of the story behind the founding of the school.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]
The Medal King Flaminio can be found onboard the Stonecloud. He will reward the player with different items in exchange for mini medals, ranging from rare pieces of weapons and armour that cannot be found anywhere else, alchemy ingredients, and accessory recipes for the Alchemy Pot.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
A Jailcat by the name of King Maximog serves as the Medal King in this game. As in the main series, Maximog will reward the player for turning medals in to him.
