The somatic staff is a recurring wand in the Dragon Quest series. It has a high attack power, but drains a small amount of the wielder's MP each time an attack is performed. This makes it ideal to use in places where magic cannot be used or if the spellcaster's magic has been sealed away.

In the original NES version, the con man at the equipment shop in Assaram will sell it for 40,000 gold, but can be convinced to reduce the price down to 5,000 gold, while it can be purchased in Theddon for 2,500 gold. It can be sold for 1,875 gold. The staff is the strongest weapon for Mages in all versions except for the GBC version.

The somatic staff has an Attack bonus of +60 (+55 in the NES Version) and can only be wielded by Borya, Kiryl, Maya, and Meena. Orifiela has this among her equipment. As in the previous game, it consumes 3 MP for each attack made. It can be purchased in Zalenagrad from Chapter 5 onward and Canalot for 2,500 gold and sold for 1,875 gold. The staff can also be dropped by Beleths.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The somatic staff has an Attack bonus of +55 and can be equipped by Bianca, Flora, the Hero's daughter, Prestidigitator, Ghost, Hulagan, Old man of the sea, Epipany, Wiz pip, Conkuisitor, and Conkjurer. Once again, it consumes 3 MP each time an attack is made. It can be purchased from Helmunaptra and Lofty Peak for 2,500 gold and sold for 1,250 gold. The staff can also be dropped by firebirds.
