Due to the multiplayer design orientation of the title, the traditional Hero vocation does not appear in the ninth entry. As such, the Zap family of spells have been removed and the associated skills given to other classes. There are two skills, in addition to skills learned through vocations, the Hero of Dragon Quest IX learns in relation to the plot:
Egg On[edit]
Taught by Patty after speaking with her in the Quester's Rest. This ability increases the tension of an ally by one level.
Note that despite teaching the hero this skill, Patty cannot actually use it if she joins the party.
Zoom[edit]
Unlike in previous Dragon Quest games, Zoom is only available to the Hero after first returning to the Observatory and arriving at Newid Isle. Since it costs nothing to cast, chimaera wings are only needed if the hero is incapacitated.
