Could use some imput if your could[edit]

http://dragon-quest.org/wiki/Cursed_belt

In articles like that, I've tried to incorporate the image into that infobox. Basically ones like [[File:(insert image here)]] or Image:(insert image here), but nothing. Any ideas? Antiyonder (talk) 14:16, 14 April 2014 (CDT)

--It's the way the template is set up; you can adjust the spaces and change what goes where, but it won't effect how it's presented unfortunately. Whomever designed it wanted to keep the pictures and information separate, so it might be easier to select an alternative template instead. Wish I had more to say on the matter, but its just a design flaw.User:Follower_of_Light 15:25, 14 April 2014 (CDT)

Merchant rejoining in all versions?[edit]

Now, when you say that the merchant in Dragon Quest III rejoins in all versions, are you merely talking about all remakes? Cause I do know for sure that he/she remains jailed for the rest of the original NES version. Antiyonder (talk) 20:45, 28 May 2014 (CDT)

...I could have swarm that mustachio'd dolt rejoined in the nes version. My bad. But if you or anyone else finds a goof in one of my edits or thinks something is up, by all means feel free to change it. I know a lot of wikimedia is totalitarian about, well....everything, but this place is way more chill. We're like the Jimmy Buffet of Wikis that way. Main Page Updates[edit]

I've added some news about the mobile releases on the main page. I've also unprotected that page, so you and others can make updates if you want to. I haven't done a good job of keeping things up to date recently, so feel free to go for it. If we end up having vandalism problems, we may have to work on an alternative. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 01:24, 6 December 2014 (CST)

German Wiki[edit]

Hi, thank you for your help. Please could you activate interwiki here? Thank you!! We have so much to do :) -- Lycon 08:48, 17 February 2015 (CST)

I've contacted flyingragnar about enabling the feature, so with any luck he'll do so shortly!(Follower of Light (talk) 11:22, 18 February 2015 (CST))
Thank you! -- Lycon 08:24, 20 February 2015 (CST)

Re: Great start[edit]

Salut! And thanks for welcoming me at the wiki. Thank you for liking the templates as well. Dragon Quest is one of my favorite games and would like to help out with modernizing the wiki. I want to give the entire wiki a great layout and make it feel very original along with its NIWA and SEIWA affiliates. If you would like to help out or have any ideas to share feel free, and if I need help I will tell you. By the way, thanks for stopping that random vandal from last week :). IceKidd (Local UserpageLocal Talk) 15:23, 23 September 2015 (CDT)

Hmm... If you are talking about the content in the tabber, then I have an idea for it, but further... I do not know what you actually mean, sorry. For the monster infoboxes, I can probably fix that within one or two days (only if the codes can give me a chance to have what I want). So the monster infobox is not a problem. I will await what you actually mean about showing multiple versions of equipment lists, spells etc. because I see a tabber holding such content. Thanks. IceKidd (Local UserpageLocal Talk) 09:36, 25 September 2015 (CDT)
Oh, like that. That's possible. IceKidd (Local UserpageLocal Talk) 02:26, 1 October 2015 (CDT)

Royal Missive?[edit]

So I'm guessing this is what the Royal Scroll is called now? Does the Mobile version of Dragon Quest IV use that name now? Antiyonder (talk) 17:18, 5 October 2015 (CDT)

Will check IV when I get to that point. Here's the list of name changes for III http://www.woodus.com/den/games/dq3andios/namechanges.php Will fix more when I get an actual chance to edit again, probably just throw up a disambiguation page if it calls for it (Follower of Light (talk) 10:45, 6 October 2015 (CDT))

Regarding uploads...[edit]

Is there a page to provide a general request for uploads (One such example for DQ IV that you may not have unless you have access to the Japanese Playstation port and can read the language enough to play)? Antiyonder (talk) 21:36, 14 November 2015 (CST)

Unfortunately I've got no clue if such a method exists; what I've been doing is using the scanned guide books and ripping the images from those to fill in the gaps and make the items/equipment pages more in-line with VIII's. I know the assorted fan pages and tumblr accounts have some of the japanese-only images, so browsing around there might be your best bet. If you have any in particular you really want I can double check the Brady guides and see if it's in there for you (Follower of Light (talk) 14:41, 15 November 2015 (CST))
Well, I could at the very least benefit with the various images for IV's version of Immigrant Town and though I won't likely get to it until next year (I'm actually planning to do a playthrough of my brother's copy of VIII for the PS2 and make edits accordingly) the Fungeon, Vault of Vrenor (especially the added portion for the Lightning staff) and the Pinnacle Chapel in relations to the DS port. If doable, it would be nice to have a more separate image for both Mamon and Mamon Mine as it is before & after the monster meeting in Diabolic Hall. Especially as the before image I have also includes the town, whereas I think it would be redundant if I had the appropriate pic for it. Antiyonder (talk) 19:30, 15 November 2015 (CST)
I don't think immigrant town artwork exists, not unless some was made for 7's remake. For the fungeon and vault, do you mean dungeon maps? If so I can rip the ones Brady made for you. For the Mamon issue we could just merge the pages; I mean they are directly connected after all. (Follower of Light (talk) 10:48, 16 November 2015 (CST))
Actually, I was going to just say that any images from the guide if any would do for Immigrant Town if they had an in-game rendering of the map if no official artwork is present. And yeah, the dungeon maps for Fungeon and Vault were what I was requesting, so cool. As for Mamon, I suggested it to FlyingRagner, but he suggested Mamon's town and mine remain separate. Antiyonder (talk) 13:48, 16 November 2015 (CST)

I'm embarrassed. Getting a start on more uploads and assigning them. The link for the Inn didn't work and I eventually found it, but I ended up reuploading versions of them. I think I could use both sets though. I could use yours for the top of the articles and the background versions for gallery.

Infact I'm sending you a list of pics I edited and uploaded, with imput if you think they are suitable as uploaded. Trying to see if I can be more independent on some of this. Especially for say articles like Purgatory Island from VIII that lack them and it's even hard to find on say Woodus or Realm of Darkness' site. By the way, he has been making updates again so maybe he could be added to the list of affiliates? Anyway...

Background version of the pics:

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_IV_Android_Overworld_Item_Shop.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_IV_Android_Overworld_Inn.jpg

Similar pics but from the Treasures no Trapdoors from V:

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_V_Android_Treasures_n%27_Trapdoors_Item_Shop.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_V_Android_Treasures_n%27_Trapdoors_Inn.jpg

And from VIII as some articles that could use some (Which I accomplish by viewing them in game from a first person perspective).

First one is the overworld. Tried uploading a basic one from Woodus and well (https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_VIII_PS2_Overworld.webp). So my second attempt and the Purgatory Island pic, plus the Dragovian Sanctuary map.

If those are deemed acceptable as is I'll try for more in that game and others if possible:

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_VIII_Android_Overworld.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_VIII_Android_Purgatory_Island.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_VIII_Android_Dragovian_Sanctuary.jpg

And yeah the Woodus version of VIII's map was .webp as opposed to .jpg or .png. So delete request added.

Last couple of pics from III. One is the Dragon Queen which I even used the Fade spell for a better glimpse at the sprite. But I think it would work for the gallery as is (I was thinking of an in game pic of the outside, plus for the gallery the spot where you enter Cloudsgate Citadel, which could even be added to the Elves and Faeries gallery). And the Great Pit of Giaga one is an interesting case.

Yeah the Cell phone port and possibly the Switch version lack the ability to attack your allies (or say damaging Zoma with Heal spells), but an NPC in Giaga still acknowledges you are able to do so to counter Confusion.

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_III_Android_Dragon_Queen.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_III_Android_Giaga_Pit_Dialogue_Error.jpg

Here's hoping I did well with my approach. Antiyonder (talk) 00:40, 11 February 2022 (EST)

You've done great! The overworld inn, item store, the III pics (I need to hurry up and make the Queen's page already), and the VIII pics aside from the webp all look good enough to publish for me--if you ever need to convert a webp to a png or other format, I've found the easiest way is to plug it into ezgif.com. The TnT board screenshots look a little pixelated to me, was this the native resolution or did you zoom in a bit? (Follower of Light (talk) 14:53, 12 February 2022 (EST))
Just what I've been doing with the rest. Cutting off the top and bottom to keep focus on the relevant stuff, but as you said, the rest did turn out well. Here are the pics unedited though:
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_V_Android_Treasures_n%27_Trapdoors_Item_Merchant.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_V_Android_Treasures_n%27_Trapdoors_Innkeeper.jpg
Now if you want to edit them, I would request keeping the background in addition to the Merchant. Antiyonder (talk) 18:49, 14 February 2022 (EST)

Among plans for pictures, I'm going to retake some character shots that I got from Woodus' site. So that means I get to pic Charmless. Yay?

Also going to try for each of the Infamous monsters that at least are in the Android port. Taking them from the start of battle so I get a clear shot, but should I keep or edit out the textbook? I might go without, but it's the best indicator of it being a recruitable Monster as opposed to say a regular encounter. Antiyonder (talk) 18:49, 14 February 2022 (EST)

So I upload some pics for my profile and am having a little fun with it (But in all serious as I don't want to reedit every birthday, I just post the year of my birth). Even added a gallery and profile template:
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/User:Antiyonder
What do you think? Antiyonder (talk) 21:21, 18 February 2022 (EST)
Not bad! A little personalization goes a long way, and I like the team names for VIII's groups; better than the WWE styled garbage I came up with as a kid. As for the text on the infamous monsters, I say it'd be easier to keep it and I agree it's more informative that way.(Follower of Light (talk) 18:23, 21 February 2022 (EST))

Restored Estark's Labyrinth as is. While most locations are capitalized, the recently retitled Tunnel south of Zoomingale was not, so I figured I'd go with how Storeyteller referred to it as. Plus Estark's labyrinth only had a couple of direct links and 13 for the fully capped version. Antiyonder (talk) 04:35, 17 July 2022 (EDT)

Just for an opinion on the side.[edit]

While I figured it relevant enough, my creating of the article for Captain N: The Game Master was pretty much an indulgence on my part. That said, how well together would you say it is (i.e. format, grammar)? Character section in particular was made to be similar to Itadaki Street' Character section. Antiyonder (talk) 19:30, 15 November 2015 (CST)

Yay[edit]

I'm not alone here anymore! - icysugarspike (talk) 13:17, 8 May 2016 (CDT)

I can't edit as frequently as I'd like, but I'm trying to help out with what I can. Thanks again for uploading all of those amazing equipment and item images--they're exactly what this place needed! Just remember to take breaks now and again so you don't get burned out!(Follower of Light (talk) 10:01, 11 May 2016 (CDT))
Addendum to what I said before: is there anything in particular you'd like some help with? Just let me know how I can pitch in and I'll give it my all (Follower of Light (talk) 17:41, 17 May 2016 (CDT))

I'm an obsessive type, so I don't get burned out (too much), but thanks for the concern. The scans in question come from the original Famicom guides for I-IV and the Super Famicom guide for V. Don't have VI yet, and the VIII enemy images I'm currently working on come from the VIII guide. I'll try and upload the cover images of them (the guides) sometime. Surely, they have a place here somewhere on this wiki. - icysugarspike (talk) 17:43, 20 May 2016 (CDT)
Computer's not booting up. Says something's wrong with the startup disk. Still here, just won't be uploading anything for a while. This came in the mail, too, which makes it more frustrating. - icysugarspike (talk) 07:54, 25 May 2016 (CDT)

That's a major bummer, but congratulations for such a sweet find! Consider this your vacation period, ha ha. (Follower of Light (talk) 23:59, 31 May 2016 (CDT))

Apparently, there's a certain site you don't much care for[edit]

Ummm, so you're just leaving these pages blank? - icysugarspike (talk) 10:19, 3 June 2016 (CDT)

Shouldn't you delete them? - icysugarspike (talk) 10:22, 3 June 2016 (CDT)
I'm not a member of the moderation, so deleting articles is beyond me at the moment. As for tumblr, you're absolutely right =P (Follower of Light (talk) 10:26, 3 June 2016 (CDT))
Ha. Half the time, those lazy bastards are stealing the art I've been uploading, but this is the chance anyone takes, eh? - icysugarspike (talk) 10:29, 3 June 2016 (CDT)
BTW, it wasn't really Tumblr I was hinting at in the headline of this chat. - icysugarspike (talk) 10:44, 3 June 2016 (CDT)
The Den is a fine resource and Woodus himself is a capital bro, but the inhabitants of the forum have the unfortunate tendency to make NeoGaf and Gamefaqs users look well cultured, civilized, and perfectly rational.(Follower of Light (talk) 11:57, 9 June 2016 (CDT))

About Consolidating[edit]

I think it's a good idea. However, I think that bosses (or mini-bosses) merit their own page still (Abominable Showman, etc.). I believe this consolidation would go a long way in differentiating us from "that other wiki". We each have things to contribute to each other that the Other Wiki doesn't have.

Here's an example of probably the way it should be (redirecting all palette swap monsters to the original monster they are "inspired by"):

Powie yowie

  • Descriptive line.
  • appearances in each game.
  • sub-headings:
    • Sweaty yeti
    • sasquash
    • see also: abominable showman

etc.
Also, include all official art within their sections (or at the bottom in a gallery ?)

The only problem might be, if someone is cross-referencing a certain monster by categorization (at the bottom of each entry's page), they might still arrive at the page in question, but to find out where and in what game this certain monster appeared, things might get a tad confusing. Maybe not. - icysugarspike (talk) 10:33, 20 July 2016 (CDT)

Makes sense to me, but if a pallet swap gains significance on its own it deserves its own page. Liquid Metal Slimes are more popular than Bubble Slimes, for example, so it wouldn't work out if they were included in the latter's page. I'll experiment with a She-Slime sub-heading in the Slime page, and if that format looks good I can go from there. Feel free to change a few things around while I'm doing this until a set order is established though, and that goes for anyone reading this paragraph as well. Also, I'd like to try and consolidate shared names as well, like I had done with the Prestidialligator. For monsters that previously shared names, such as the quadrupedal and bipedal dragons, I can toss up a disambiguation page.(Follower of Light (talk) 12:34, 23 July 2016 (CDT))

Yikes, I'm not...the manager. No, no, thank you. I've been down that road before (a couple of times). Anyway, go with the original base monsters (if you're sure that's what it is), then the most prominent (as the case might be). - icysugarspike (talk) 13:55, 25 August 2016 (CDT)

Can do. Do you have any favorites you'd like for me to work on as well? Right now I'm going to my favorite families and working my way down the list.(Follower of Light (talk) 12:41, 26 August 2016 (CDT))
No requests from me, thanks. And of course you'll work on your favorite families first. We don't want this to become work on this wiki (when you're not having fun anymore, just in case you forgot)! There's enough of that going on the rest of the day! - icysugarspike (talk) 16:52, 26 August 2016 (CDT)

Please help[edit]

At first, I thought perhaps this was Rubiss, but she is in human form in this game, is she not? The image in question. They are being terrorized (?) by some water goddess? Help, please! - icysugarspike (talk) 10:48, 18 August 2016 (CDT)

I believe this is the ghost of Olivia keeping the party from passing the strait at the prison shrine. The j-wiki is temporarily down, but once it's up I'll double check. I've actually found no illustrations of Rubiss aside from the cover to her lite novel, so I'm inclinded to think it's another ethereal lass.(Follower of Light (talk) 11:17, 18 August 2016 (CDT))
This makes much sense. It's the only thing it could be. Thanks! - icysugarspike (talk) 11:22, 18 August 2016 (CDT)
Any time mate. Half the fun of working on this wiki is deciphering older pictures as if they were hieroglyphics(Follower of Light (talk) 10:18, 19 August 2016 (CDT))
Is this the novel you're talking about? - icysugarspike (talk) 11:57, 2 September 2016 (CDT)
yes, that's her. Doing some more research, she's appeared in a few illustrations of the ITEM STORY book, and a small cameo in the Slime chapter of the MONSTER STORY book. Green hair reaching her wide hips, Jessica-tier boobs, pointed elf ears, and a purple vest-like blouse that goes over her white gown. I'll upload those pictures today and we'll figure out where to put them later. I do get the impression that Horii wants to leave hr design up to the player's imagination now though, since only has the two teeny sprites from III and VI, and nothing at all in Builders. Perhaps she's higher up on the deity ladder than Doc Agon?(Follower of Light (talk) 09:42, 3 September 2016 (CDT))

Hey, how are you? Please, let me direct your attention to this. - icysugarspike (talk) 12:56, 19 October 2016 (CDT)

New guidebooks[edit]

Just got in guidebooks for two Slime MoriMori games and three Mystery Dungeon games. This wiki needs more art in those categories, so I forked over the cash. Good things are coming... - icysugarspike (talk) 16:20, 5 September 2016 (CDT)

Jesus man, just don't forget to cast kazing on your wallet! (Follower of Light (talk) 15:41, 6 September 2016 (CDT))

They were only five dollars each, so no kazing required. - icysugarspike (talk) 15:45, 6 September 2016 (CDT)

Well still--we all appreciate you taking financial hits for the wiki's sake, just make sure you don't damper your bank account, ok? (Follower of Light (talk) 17:01, 6 September 2016 (CDT))
But, this is probably what I would be spending my money on, anyway. The wife hasn't tossed me out yet, so it can't be all bad. - icysugarspike (talk) 17:15, 6 September 2016 (CDT)

You mean, Tori art like this? - icysugarspike (talk) 18:30, 6 September 2016 (CDT)
Or that Noah's ark girl? I hadn't even heard of her until I googled her. Yechh. - icysugarspike (talk) 13:50, 7 September 2016 (CDT)
I'm talking about Toriyama you cheeky rotter =P (Follower of Light (talk) 13:26, 9 September 2016 (CDT))
Mm, he's quite good, too, isn't he? - icysugarspike (talk) 14:03, 9 September 2016 (CDT)

Mystery art[edit]

I've uploaded a picture below of extremely low quality. I find it tantalizingly interesting, as I have never seen it before (and I've seen just about all DQ art - official and otherwise). At first, I thought "fan art", maybe even obscure Japanese fan art, but, from what I can make out, it looks frighteningly official. Can you tell me your opinion and, if you possess any artbooks with said image, can you upload it?
Image:DQIV_low_quality.png
Thanks. - icysugarspike (talk) 07:46, 14 September 2016 (CDT)

Looks like part of the ps1 guide books--the style matches the period he was in, especially the shading. I'll double check and see what I can find.(Follower of Light (talk) 14:24, 14 September 2016 (CDT))
Yeah, its a composite image of the two ps1 guide book covers.(Follower of Light (talk) 14:27, 14 September 2016 (CDT))
Thanks, I'll see if I can get hold of those images. - icysugarspike (talk) 15:13, 14 September 2016 (CDT)
I'm giving up. Maybe, I'll fork out the cash someday for those particular guides, but not in the immediate future. Money's getting a bit too tight to mention. - icysugarspike (talk) 07:23, 18 September 2016 (CDT)
Absolutely, no need to shell out when more important things are on your plate. You're responsible for providing 90% of the images here in the first place, so I believe a financial vacation is well deserved.(Follower of Light (talk) 12:22, 18 September 2016 (CDT))

For Your Perusal[edit]

Depressingly honest article about the series' chances outside of Japan. Nothing you probably don't know already, but it makes you wish that SE would let Dragon Quest go and hand it over to someone who doesn't expect so much in sales to consider it a success. (XSeed, Atlus, etc.) Read when you have the time. - icysugarspike (talk) 08:38, 20 September 2016 (CDT)

This is three years old mate. I'm not one for doom and gloom regarding the series anyways, least of all when Heroes sold well enough to justify bringing over its sequel and Builders. Add the sales from the Mobile releases and Steam, and you've got a very steady income for SE. Remember, Kek teaches us that perception defines reality, so stay positive (Follower of Light (talk) 16:53, 20 September 2016 (CDT))
Thanks. You're right. Staying positive is what it's all about for me here lately. ;) - icysugarspike (talk) 17:05, 20 September 2016 (CDT)
This is probably none of my business, but all this time I thought you were a Brit, but since your Griffith jokes comment, now I'm thinking you're Australian. Wrong on both counts? Don't answer if you don't want to. I might come to your very doorstep one day, ha! - icysugarspike (talk) 12:53, 21 September 2016 (CDT)
Griffith is the bad guy from Kentaro Miura's Berserk, and is a class of demon called a Godhand. I'm from Atlanta, I just shit-post as well as any Australian and I have the unfortunate circumstance of having British friends. I do have the heads of 3287 abbos in my freezer collection if that makes you feel better about your assumption though(Follower of Light (talk) 14:57, 21 September 2016 (CDT))
No, I figured I was wrong. And you've got a very strange collection. Try ice pops instead. - icysugarspike (talk) 15:04, 21 September 2016 (CDT)

Muuuu-sic, Professor![edit]

As you may have noticed, I've been recently uploading a lot of album covers. We need somebody (you did ask a while back if there was any way you could help out, if you could) to create pages for these images. It would be easy to copy and paste (if it had to be done), but there is research that could be done. My strong point is getting the images, at the highest resolution I can find. If you don't wish to take this on, that's fine. Your thoughts? - icysugarspike (talk) 09:39, 22 September 2016 (CDT)

Sure, I can create pages for the albums. There are a few resources that list the tracks for damn near all of the releases, so fact-checking shouldn't be difficult. If I'm going to work on this project I'll need some help on IX's equipment pages though--working on the weapon's section by myself nearly killed me earlier this year.(Follower of Light (talk) 11:55, 24 September 2016 (CDT))
Nearly killed y---? Like I've said before, if it starts to become work on this wiki and not done out of pure passion for the series, then it's time to start demanding a paycheck you'll never get. (?) Anyway, thanks! You are awesome! - icysugarspike (talk) 13:55, 24 September 2016 (CDT)
It wasn't an all night marathon or anything similar--just the tedium of filling out the tables over the course of a week gets old. Many hands make light work though, so any contributions to IX's various equipment pages will always be appreciated.(Follower of Light (talk) 22:41, 24 September 2016 (CDT))

Who's That Boy?[edit]

You have said half the fun on this wiki is deciphering older pictures as if they were hieroglyphics. So then, who's this boy? He's from DQM (first game with Terry and Milly), I can tell you that much. - icysugarspike (talk) 18:04, 28 September 2016 (CDT)

I believe that's Pulio, the ranch hand who babysits your monsters. Not 100% sure, but his old sprite and current polygon model are very close.(Follower of Light (talk) 18:59, 28 September 2016 (CDT))
And this must be his 3DS design in this picture. So it is then! Thanks. File:DQM 3DS Feeding Time.png. - icysugarspike (talk) 08:37, 29 September 2016 (CDT)
Yup, that's what he looked like in the screenshot I saw.(Follower of Light (talk) 09:37, 29 September 2016 (CDT))

Being the Pain in the Arse that I am[edit]

Have a request, please. Do you have this image any larger? File:DQVII gathering.png - icysugarspike (talk) 16:31, 29 September 2016 (CDT)

Not on my person at the moment, but I'll see if I can't find it(Follower of Light (talk) 14:20, 30 September 2016 (CDT))
Thank you, sir. - icysugarspike (talk) 14:38, 30 September 2016 (CDT)

Could we make the Enemy template work somehow horizontal?[edit]

Icysugarspike directed me to you. :)

I have a suggestion about the Enemy template. Currently each one forces a line break, and so on pages like Slime, it's not uncommon to get huge columns of them, making pages much longer than they ought to be. Considering most monsters have multiple boxes per game entry I was thinking we could figure out a way to get them aligned horizontally per game (if there is a sub-type of monster like Slimification, they'd be in their own horizontal row.) What do you think? I don't know if it's possible with CSS floats, and I was thinking of using HTML tables (a preview edit worked fine), but I don't wanna complicate anything for other users. Feedback would be great! :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 18:39, 12 October 2016 (CDT)

This is a good idea, but the sad fact is that I'm not the best when it comes to template modification. The best I've been able to do thus far when it comes to displaying differing stats between versions of one game is to use < br > to segregate the numbers and point out where the differences come from in parenthesis. DQ is very consistent with stats across remakes and ports once the initial change is made, so its always safe to assume that a monster from an SNES remake will have the same stats as in the latest smart phone version.
I'm sorry I can't be of more direct help, I really am, but I think you're on to something with this idea and I wish you the best of luck in your experiments. Don't worry about any serious changes to the templates being a hassle for the other users either--we just copy/paste what we need then blank it to fill it out with the info we're adding, so the actual process won't change much for anyone. If you need to, pick a lonely page bare of information and use that as a sandbox--the DQM3 exclusive monsters won't ever be filled out properly for a long time, so don't worry about "wrecking" one of those pages. (Follower of Light (talk) 13:54, 14 October 2016 (CDT))
Okay, so after a few experiments I think the easiest way to achieve what I had in mind is the add a HTML div and float it. You can see an example here: Iron ant#Dragon Quest II Unfortunately this requires doing it manually for each instance, but it gives us the most control, and doesn't break anything in the meantime. Look at the Wikitext and tell me if you think it would confuse other editors.
As for the DQIX Enemy template, could you explain in greater detail what you're trying to achieve? Forgive me, but it's still a bit hazy to me. But if I can, I will try my best to implement it. :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 00:08, 16 October 2016 (CDT)
I don't think having to do it manually will be a problem for anyone; the change is out in the open and easy enough to see. If it ever becomes a serious problem I just fix it myself. Ye did good lad.
Regarding the dq9 box, if you go to Corvus' page and click on Additional Details at the bottom of his box, you'll see it lists his elemental weaknesses and ailment resistances in color coded boxes. The problem is it doesn't cover all the ailments in the game, like blunt, and for the life of me I don't know how to add the missing boxes. Do you think there is anyway to rectify this?(Follower of Light (talk) 10:54, 16 October 2016 (CDT))
Okay, so I did a preview edit on the DQ9 enemy box, and I was able to add the extra row. If you could just give me a list of the ailments to add, and the colors you'd like associated with them I should be able to do it. :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 16:44, 16 October 2016 (CDT)
UPDATE: I decided to add blunt to the infobox so you could tell me if it looked like what you wanted :)
You're a right Rubiss-send mate! The only other status ailments are Sap and Decelerate; I'm not picky about colors so go with whatever you think looks best. Because there are only two more boxes to go, you can try spelling out decelerate fully to see if that helps close the gap. If that looks too gaudy to you, feel free to shorten it to whatever you like!
Seriously, thank you so much for doing this. If you ever need an article made or a fact-checked, come to me and I'll have it done in less than an hour guaranteed! (Follower of Light (talk) 16:12, 18 October 2016 (CDT))
You're most very welcome, my friend. :) I added the two other attributes to the DQ9 enemy template. I think it all checks out A-OK. Eventually I'd like to go in and make attributes link to their proper articles, where possible, if that's ok with you.
Also, going back to making Template:Enemy work horizontal, seeing my idea in action on Slime has proven it's flaws. The wikitext is messy even for me. So I'd like to propose a secondary solution that was inspired by what they do over at the Final Fantasy wiki. Basically I think we could make an enemy infobox specific to each game, and it would:
  1. work horizontally (yay!)
  2. Include only two segments: one for the original version, and one for all remakes
  3. include game specific attributes (like catch rates)
  4. Break nothing, and make things cleaner.
I spent this afternoon coming up with a design, that you can see here. What do you think? :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 18:26, 18 October 2016 (CDT)
It looks good! Considering that 9 has no remake (yet) and 10 is still up in the air, this ought to work out well. So long as it recruit rates, drop rates, skills, and the bestiary number are added, I cannot for see a problem with this template. It will take a bit, but I'll try and change the monster pages I've been condensing to use it once you've finished. This bestiary project is starting to feel like my own vietnam at this point, ha ha.
As far as the elements linking back to their own articles, you might want to hold off on that though--Level5 opted not to differentiate between spells and skills when it comes to elemental classification, so there wouldn't be much chance for a player to confuse themselves by thinking, say, that Kafrizz is different from Fire Fource. It's a big departure from the days of 6, 7, and 8 where THREE types of fire existed, and I'm glad its gone forward into 10 and 11. On top of that, Blast and Lightning use the same elemental marker, so it would be difficult to split them between Bang and Lightning Storm.(Follower of Light (talk) 12:59, 19 October 2016 (CDT))

Know of any good DQ art sites[edit]

Just curious. I know there are some Tumblr ones and some japanese blogs out there, but do you know of any good ones, specifically? - icysugarspike (talk) 15:01, 14 October 2016 (CDT)

Other than realms of darkness and japanese google, I do not. That being said, you could try asking members on the Den for specific images if you have those in mind.(Follower of Light (talk) 18:36, 14 October 2016 (CDT))

Could use your opinion on the PlayStation articles[edit]

As there is no article for the 3rd or 4th PlayStations, plus the articles for Sony PlayStation & Sony PlayStation 2 are pretty slim, I was wondering if you think it might be a good idea to just merge the two articles and just make it an article for any PS console from here on out. Thanks. Antiyonder (talk) 14:39, 22 October 2016 (CDT)

Should we reduce fractions?[edit]

I'm about halfway done with re-doing all of the templates for DQ1's monsters, and I've noticed that among the evasion and resistances, there's a lot of fractions that could be simplified. Example: an evasion of 864 could be written simpler as 18. Should we do so? Or should we leave them at there base denominator for clarity? :)TheCodingGamer (talk) 11:11, 24 October 2016 (CDT)

I think the base rate of 1/64 for evasion and crits is much more commonly understood among fans than it was in years prior, so I don't see a problem with displaying the simpler fractions. I still need to add the remake resistance rates for the remaining monsters, so I'll save you the trouble and handle the change. Really starting to wish we had an internal polling system that wasn't reliant on the dragon's den now that situations like this are popping up more often. (Follower of Light (talk) 16:34, 24 October 2016 (CDT))

Should we add a "Did you know?" section to the homepage?[edit]

Seeing as the homepage has been undergoing some updates recently, I was wondering if you think it would be appropriate if we made a "Did you know?" trivia section. Perhaps 4-5 little facts with links to well written articles to help new visitors explore around a bit. Many wikis offer this, and I thought I'd be nice if we did too. So, what do you say? :)

As a side note, I finished updating the enemy infoboxes for all DQ1 monsters, and I'm currently working on doing it for all DQ2 monsters. If you're working on any specific game(s) or project(s) just let me know, and I could whip up whatever infoboxes or templates you'd like; even if it's just a redesign. TheCodingGamer (talk) 15:13, 5 November 2016 (CDT)

I think that would be a fantastic idea! Registered users could contribute tidbits and obscure facts, and the front page could display up to three of them at once. You'll need the owner's approval, but you've got my vote.
As for the infobox face-lifts, I imagine that VII would get a priority as it's the hot new sensation at the moment. There are tons of resistance tabs to add for that, but I help if you need to double check which ones are real and others fan speculation. More importantly though, its better to tackle the projects you find the most fun first. That helps prevent burnout and will keep you more motivated. You've done a lot to improve the site already, so don't feel guilty if you decide to give priority to personal goals for a while.(Follower of Light (talk) 16:33, 5 November 2016 (CDT))
If you need any trivia tidbits, I'd be more than happy to contribute! How would we post them though? Maybe a thread or something similar? Aphelion (talk) 17:52, 5 November 2016 (CDT)
@Follower of Light If you'd like I could make a DQ7Enemy infobox designed with the stats found at: http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~dqwiz/dq7re/monster.html Would that work best?
And yes I was starting to get a tad burned out on filling in all those those enemy infoboxes. I think I'll slow that down for a bit. If I may, I'd like to give a facelift (aesthetic only) to some of our other templates. Many seem really generic and I think visitors might be more intrigued if we show style and effort. Just my opinion, and I'll always run everything by you guys. :)
@Aphelion Glad you're on board! Well I was just thinking we'd have a template like this with a list that any registered user could contribute to (replacing one of the current facts.) I trust all of you to contribute fun trivia. Considering the traffic we currently get it would only need to be updated every 2-3 weeks. :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 01:00, 6 November 2016 (CDT)
@TheCodingGamer I'm so glad I found that site. Also, VI and VII are fundamentally the same when it comes to battle elements, so you'll be hitting two birds at once if you do one or the other. The only real difference on the top of my head would be adding an asterisk to the VI tame rate that points out it only works in the 16-bit version. I still need to add tame rates for the bulk of VIIs bestiary, so I going the extra mile of converting the rest of the data to the new template wouldn't be a problem.
If the future template changes look as good as the one for I and II, go right ahead! The reason I brought up burn out is that I lost a big drive to edit for weeks after touching up IXs weapon page. Large projects can get very Sisyphian before long. As far a style goes, what kind of look would be fundamentally "Dragon Questy"? Should the monster templates reflect the logo of the game the data is coming from, as would equipment and items? Should vocation icons be used, or just a space to type in the text? I suppose I'm looking at this as more of an art project than an encyclopedia at this rate.(Follower of Light (talk) 09:29, 6 November 2016 (CST))
@Aphelion Awesome, glad to have another contributor! As Coding said, we should be fine with updating it every two weeks or so, unless we all go berserk and add enough to justify adding a feature that changes the trivia with each page refresh.(Follower of Light (talk) 09:29, 6 November 2016 (CST))

@Follower of Light Alright, I'll get to work on the template for VII ASAP, and then eventually reuse it for VI. I'll tell you as soon as I finish it so you can review it and ensure it's accurate.
Also I was thinking the exact same things. Logos, icons, etc. should all be integrated as much as possible. I'll add logos to all DQ enemy infoboxes today if I can. Okay, starting with Template:Monster Infobox I was thinking to update to look like the DQ enemy infoboxes, but with a blue-style scheme. I'm trying to think of any extra parameters we could add. I think a Latest Appearance might be useful, and height/weight information would be cool, but I don't know if that even exists...any further suggestions?
@Aphelion Okay, so I copied that mockup to Template:Did You Know, so you and Follower should go ahead and add your facts to the list, and then let me know when you're done so I can get it on the homepage.
Awesome, thanks a million! I remember there being older logos for the individual titles that had unique colors to them, like IV being lavender and III having a slightly greenish-blue tone. Unless there is a way to add specific icons and other customized bits to the tables, color coding might be the way to go.Unfortunately, non-battle data like height and weight are never consistent in this series--I've got the old bestiary book from 96 and it flat out glosses over details like that. The Latest Appearance parameter would be good as well for quick-refferencing, especially when we don't have monster lists complete for the rest of the 3ds games.(Follower of Light (talk) 16:23, 6 November 2016 (CST))

Dragon Quest VII Enemy Template[edit]

Okay, so it took several days, a Japanese dictionary, and more snacks than I'd care to mention, but Template:DQ7Enemy is now usable. I did my best to make it as accurate as possible, but translating spells was very difficult because not every spell's Japanese name is available on here (a good project to start on soon!) There were a few that I couldn't figure out for the life of me, and if you know what they are feel free to translate them. If you find any errors, I'll take care of them ASAP.

I still need to update Template:Monster Infobox, so I'll get on that soon, and I'm still re-doing DQ2 enemies on the side. Are there any other projects that need help? :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 14:49, 11 November 2016 (CST)

Really wish you would have let me help you with this rather than shouldering the burden all on your own, but thanks regardless for doing this! I have the english names for all the skills/resistances you left in Japanese, but I can't get any of the changes to stick when I preview them. If you can tell me how to make those changes work I'll implement them immediately (already have everything copied, just need to paste) and get to work stamping the template on VII's monsters. (Follower of Light (talk) 21:25, 11 November 2016 (CST))
Are you clicking the "Show preview" button at the bottom? That forces the template preview to refresh so you can see changes. On a side note, I used terms like "Very Low" and "High" to describe the resistances, since that was all I could find on the site I used. If you happen to have exact numbers that'd probably preferred. :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 00:22, 12 November 2016 (CST)
Updated everything, but ban dance's resistance won't show up on the PSX side. That aside, everything looks awesome and you're doing Numen's work. May need to add another section for skills, unless you've got a plan for how to separate those within the spell bracket.(Follower of Light (talk) 09:59, 12 November 2016 (CST))
Okay, ban dance and the army resistances should now show up. I also added a skill section. Well then, assuming everything is fully functional, I'm off to keep updating the DQ2 enemies. Hopefully by mid-2017 most monsters will have I-VI data finished, and sometime around Christmas and New Year we should probably work on cleaning up DQ8 content in anticipation of the 3DS release, but we can worry about that when the time comes. :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 14:40, 12 November 2016 (CST)
I'm aiming for early Spring myself, but we'll have to see what other bombs drop first, like XI or anew monsters game. VIII's documentation is actually available in english already, so that will help tremendously. For VII's template, is there a way to post just the PSX or remake versions without the other? Nearly every monster is identical in each version and it would save a lot of editing time to just fill in one, and for the bonus monsters in the remake it would look a little silly shown as a bunch of question marks and "Not Applicable"s. I do feel bad tossing you under the bus all the time with these requests though; let me handle the rest of II's mons to make up for it! (Follower of Light (talk) 08:10, 13 November 2016 (CST))
Well, for VII's template we have the option to simplify Template:DQ7Enemy to just have the PSX section, and turn the remake section into just a sprite and any notable changes. Monsters exclusive to the remake could receive their own template, say Template:DQ7RemakeExclusiveEnemy (I admit the name sucks), that would not contain any PSX sections at all. This solution would probably be the easiest to implement. To make things cleaner it'd probably be best to rename parameters to drop their prefixes (e.g. "psx-hp" would just become "hp".) This would screw up the instances where it's already being used, but I'll clean up any I find. :)
And thanks for helping me with II's monsters! Don't feel obligated to do all of them. If you fill in the data, I'd be more than happy to gather all the sprites. :D TheCodingGamer (talk) 21:32, 13 November 2016 (CST)
Thanks a ton for everything man, you're making this wiki great. Let me hit the bosses for VII real quick and I'll start finishing up II! (Follower of Light (talk) 15:56, 19 November 2016 (CST))

Magic water clean-up (in Aisle Six)[edit]

I appreciate you giving me some direction! Now, I know what area need the most work. I'll see what I can do. - icysugarspike (talk) 21:47, 3 January 2017 (CST)

I should be the one thanking you! It's hard being a digital shutter-bug.(Follower of Light (talk) 10:40, 8 January 2017 (CST))

There aren't many images in the newer guide books; I'll have to scour some of the Famicom/Super Famicom ones. Digital shutter-bug, nice one. :) - icysugarspike (talk) 12:48, 8 January 2017 (CST)

Hope you are good. was just thinking it was time for some well-deserved and long-time-coming flattery on my part. Every time I read something (true, you could be merely copy-and-pasting, but I think not) cleverly written in that great "Dragon Quest style", I think, oh, that FoL, he is greatly appreciated (by me, at least, anyway). Now that I've swelled your head, let us get back to doing what we both do best: making this wiki the greatest DQ wiki it can be! (Whew! There, that's done.) :) - 13:26, 14 January 2017 (CST)
Don't mind me, just feeling very pleased. Bob Marley tunes (and all that Tori) helps, too. :) - icysugarspike (talk) 13:29, 14 January 2017 (CST)
MTDQWGA. Doesn't roll off the tongue as well though. I do worry about holding up the standards Plus-Alpha set, but it is reassuring to know at least one person thinks I'm hitting the bullfinch's eye. I do appreciate the commendations and you have my sincere thanks; years of anonymous shitposting have steeled my resolve against the vanity of name recognition, so as long as the wiki looks good and the other dq fans get their questions answered, I'm happy. (Follower of Light (talk) 19:28, 15 January 2017 (CST))
Awesome! :) = icysugarspike (talk) 08:59, 16 January 2017 (CST)

I have not been uploading anything anymore, since when I try to upload a new image, I am automatically signed out. I can't figure out how to remain signed in, either. I feel like I'm banned from the wiki. I know this isn't true, but in the meantime, I guess there will be no more uplaods from me. Any ideas on what the problem is? - icysugarspike (talk) 06:54, 4 February 2017 (CST)

Also, my "Dragon Quest News" feed does not show up on the main page. What's going on with this wiki? - icysugarspike (talk) 06:57, 4 February 2017 (CST)
Okay, apparently I CAN upload images, so long as the images are brand-new, not uploading over a pre-existing image (which, strangely enough, I've always been able to do until now). If I load up a page with an existing image, I am automatically signed out and am of course not given permission to upload anything. Weird, huh? - icysugarspike (talk) 08:09, 4 February 2017 (CST)
Have you recently installed any script blocking add ons to your browser? That usually interferes with me whenever I try to upload something on a site and forget to allow certain scripts. I'll experiment and see if I can't find what's wrong--I've never heard of an up-load limit on any wiki before. Until I can get this sorted out, consider it an unpaid vacation (Follower of Light (talk) 10:31, 4 February 2017 (CST))
Ok, I tried uploading a brand new image and was promptly booted out. When I tried to log back in I was told I was already signed in, and that I was not accepting cookies from the site. The newsfeed is also down for me. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say its a bug in the site's programming and that Zenithian or Flyingragnar will to address it. Damn, I've brought bad karma to us all by cheating on DQ with the earthbound wiki this past week.(Follower of Light (talk) 10:43, 4 February 2017 (CST))
I left messages on FlyingRagnar and Zenithian's page. Aphelion has the same problem as us. Until this is resolved, I'm laying low. :( - icysugarspike (talk) 09:03, 5 February 2017 (CST)
No worries m8, you deserve some well-earned time off! If you find something you want edited or uploaded while you're in the Bahamas, leave me a note and I'll take care of it.(Follower of Light (talk) 13:56, 7 February 2017 (CST))
My pal! I may be a little biased in saying this, but there's no one here funnier, kinder or more eloquent than you! It's been a pleasure working with you! Now, has anybody seen my Bahama Mama? - icysugarspike (talk) 09:00, 8 February 2017 (CST)

Almost ready to return. The Return of the King? That might sound a little selfish; there are a few Kings around here. First, I need to get better. It's not the End of the World, or is it? Let's hope not, my friend. - icysugarspike (talk) 08:27, 14 April 2017 (CDT)

Thanks for the response, your help is greatly appreciated! I have been a bit happier, now that DQXI is being localized! I'd rather play that than oh, say....Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon...Won't be uploading anything for a while, so I wish you well! - icysugarspike (talk) 15:07, 4 August 2017 (CDT)
I completely understand, its hard to get excited for the same rehash over and over. XI is looking fantastic and, judging by how early the localization as announced (by the man himself no less) its likely that nintendo is going to give it as big a push as IX recieved--the switch's library is still rather thin, and they need all the AAA games they can get right now. Don't worry about taking some time off either, it is amusement park season after all! (Follower of Light (talk) 15:21, 5 August 2017 (CDT))

Site Feedback[edit]

Hey there, just wanted to say thanks for contributing so much to the wiki over the years. I'm sure you are probably aware it has been migrated to a new host. Everything should be up and working great at this point. Please let me know if you find things that are broken or could use attention. We are on a much better host now, so hopefully a lot of past problems are no longer an issue. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 00:50, 1 October 2017 (EDT)

Can do; everything is running smoothly thus far, so I don't think there are many coding bugs left if any at all. I really appreciate you adding a feature that details which templates are active on a page--it makes it so much easier to sort through things and help with presentation. If I can make one request, it would be awesome if there was a guide for using quote box colors more effectively. I think it looks nicer when the text matches the color of the character. Thanks for maintaining the site for all us users over the years, and giving us a place to share our knowledge of this incredible series without having to go through the hell of wikia. (Follower of Light (talk) 16:02, 7 October 2017 (EDT))

DQ3 Enemy Template[edit]

Well, it's shameful it took this long, but Template:DQ3Enemy is now up and running. Please let me know if anything is missing/wrong, and if you need a version for remake exclusive enemies (if any) I'd be more than happy to whip that up too. I'll try to be more active around here when I can, but hopefully this will help us make some progress. Cheers! TheCodingGamer (talk) 15:40, 12 October 2017 (EDT)

Excellent work! You've captured all the parameters, and the presentation is top-notch as usual. Only thing that needs to be added is a section for skills, and it's perfect! Orochi, Baramos, and Zoma have buffed stats in the remakes, but because its only those three I don't think there's a need to have a separate section installed--I'll just post the box again and put remake in parenthesis in the name section. You're doing plenty of vital work as is, so please don't feel pressured to over-exert yourself. Believe me, these templates are exactly what the place needed and we wouldn't have them without you.(Follower of Light (talk) 23:28, 15 October 2017 (EDT))
Alright, I added the section and conformed the remake section to be like it is in Template:DQ7Enemy/Template:DQ8Enemy. Unless you spot any bugs, then it's ready to go into full use.
Also, I hate to hijack this section so abruptly but I wanted to get your opinion on an idea I've been floating for a bit. As of right now there isn't really any set format for articles about items/equipment. Generally they just have sections with text descriptions and the available information varies vastly (for example some list locations, enemy drops, prices, etc., others don't). Others use templates for different classes of items (generally just Template:Equipment.) I think it would be a good idea to, just like we're doing with the enemies, standardize all of the statistics into one format and make templates for items/equipment for each game so that readers can see all of that important information in one glance, as well as helping editors know exactly what information each game offers/is still needed. I imagined the template offering sections for item/equipment's name, buy/sell price, effect, locations found, enemies dropping it, description, sprite (in the newer entries), and who it is equipable by (if it applies). I might be forgetting something, but regardless, I think you get an good idea. On top of that, any unique properties or general descriptions for any particular game could still be added outside of the template in the proper section as we do for some enemies. I hope this all made sense. Let me know your thoughts on it, and I'd be more than happy to recycle a template to whip up a demo for us to test. Cheers! :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 15:22, 17 October 2017 (EDT)
Sorry for the late response, life got a little wild for a moment. I think you've got a brilliant idea with the consolidation of item and equipment templates--there are far too many floating about right now and it reflects badly upon the site. I don't mean to sound like I'm throwing the users who created them under the bus or anything; I am grateful they took the initiative and created something to help organize information more effectively, but it seems like there was a lack of an over all cooperation between the users that lead to the inconsistent designs between templates. I think the armor and weapon templates you've created in the period its taken me to respond are an excellent start, and the equipable classes/characters can be typed up underneath the boxes for tidiness' sake. I'd also like to take a moment to express my gratitude for all you've done for the site during your tenure here--coding is fairly well beyond me, and its all thanks to your efforts that the site is gaining a professional look that perfectly informs readers easily and cohesively. If it weren't for yourself and Icy, I'd be at wits end trying to do it all myself.(Follower of Light (talk) 16:18, 21 October 2017 (EDT))
Well thank you so much for saying that! I just try to do what I know. And don't think your efforts aren't appreciated either. You're able to get your hands on and interpret game data a lot better than me. What use is a bunch of template if they're just empty? :)
Anyways, I went ahead and whipped up Template:DQItem as a trial. I'll change the color scheme in just a bit, but I think it gives you a good idea of what I had in mind. How's it look? Anything missing that I forgot? Since it will only need tiny tweaks for the rest of the games, producing the rest should be much easier than it is with the enemy templates. Let me know. TheCodingGamer (talk) 17:12, 23 October 2017 (EDT)
Everything is looking good! Smart thinking with the section for use in battle, and I'll start uploading the mobile descriptions once the enemy data for 3 is finished.(Follower of Light (talk) 13:19, 25 October 2017 (EDT))

Your welcome[edit]

Yeah between my Captain N related edits (which while not violating the wiki topics is to be honest a case of self indulgence for myself), I wanted to do something a little more practical, and noticing your uploads I found it to be something within my ability to take care of. Antiyonder (talk) 02:30, 14 February 2018 (EST)

Hey let's be honest, the whole NIWA sphere is a tribute to self-indulgence--heck, the mario wiki has an article on milli vanilli. Every it of knowledge is another experience point, so keep it up! (Follower of Light (talk) 12:22, 15 February 2018 (EST))

To simplify things a bit concerning some DQ ports.[edit]

Think it would be accurate enough to rename the Mobile phone page as Cell phone? Antiyonder (talk) 01:07, 10 September 2018 (EDT)

That sounds like a good idea, the things are ubiquitous enough for the two terms to be synonymous by now.Follower of Light (talk) 18:30, 13 September 2018 (EDT)

Site Updates[edit]

Hey there, I upgraded some of the back end stuff on the site tonight. The Recent Changes page is currently not working. I believe I know what the issue is and will fix it in the next day or two. Let me know if you find anything else that is not working for some reason. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 02:14, 12 March 2019 (EDT)

The edit bar that goes above the text box is missing some features now, that's the biggest thing I've found so far Follower of Light (talk) 17:45, 12 March 2019 (EDT)
I'm glad you pointed that out. That actually was something I had disabled temporarily but forgot to re-enable. I did the rest of the upgrade tonight to update MediaWiki to the latest version. Some things may look different, but everything should be working. Let me know if you spot anything not working. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 02:24, 13 March 2019 (EDT)
So far so good boss, I think the coast is clear. Also, this isn't said nearly often enough but thanks a million for hosting this site--it's given me an incredible opportunity to spread knowledge about the series and clear up some major misconceptions that have built up over the years and I'll always be thankful for that. You're doing God's work R.F! (Follower of Light (talk) 15:12, 14 March 2019 (EDT))
You make great contributions to the site and really validate having it available, so thank you! A couple other notes I can share...the site host gave us some additional storage space for free, which was nice. We were not super close to running out, but now we should be good for a while assuming there are no giant files that get added. Second, the new version of MediaWiki includes a new skin. I left it available as an option which you can try out if you go to your Preferences. It's called Timeless. We might consider whether we might want to switch or redecorate or something at some point. I know I'm not the greatest at coming up with good ideas for new site designs/images/etc. The default skin is still Vector and is what non-users will see by default. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 00:28, 15 March 2019 (EDT)
Thanks, the extra space is always much appreciated. Heck, I wouldn't mind buying a terrabyte drive and making a hard copy to be updated each month if it came to that. Timeless looks pretty good, it's like fandom's layout but smoother and without fifteen ads going on in the background. I'm all thumbs myself when it comes to style implementation, but the Den ought to able to help in that regard. Best regards, and give me a head's up whenever you need something (Follower of Light (talk) 11:01, 15 March 2019 (EDT))

General Question[edit]

Hello Follower of Light,

you are the most active user here at the moment, aren't you? Because than I would ask you.

Greetings, Königsschleim

Salutations Königsschleim! If there is anything I can help you out with, all you need to do is say so and I'll do my best to help.(Follower of Light (talk) 15:33, 1 April 2019 (EDT))
As you probably know there are not many sources where you get information about Dragon Quest. So I thought we could maybe connect all wikis about this topic to create a bigger database. I am an administrator in two other german Dragon Quest Wikis and I want to ask you for your opinion about my idea.
Greetings, Königsschleim
I agree whole-heartedly, and as the French wiki is already doing so you have all rights to connect this wiki with your own. Additionally, here are the resources I myself use for fact-checking;
http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~dqwiz/ This site has info on all mainline games, the remake changes (if any), and is continuously updated.
http://wikiwiki.jp/dqdic3rd/ This is the largest Japanese DQ wiki I have found, and it is incredible for series trivia, staff details, and all information beyond the game data.
If there is any other information I can provide, do not hesitate to ask (Follower of Light (talk) 20:01, 14 April 2019 (EDT))
Hello Follower of Light,
first of all thank you for mentioning these resources, but I think it could be hard to read them, because I do not understand the language. :) To that 'connection': Your wiki is a NIWA member, so I think you aren't be able to accept something like a partnership with a wiki, which is not independent, are you?
Greetings, Königsschleim
I've been mentioned here, so let me clarify that the French wiki, on its side, won't accept interlanguage links with non-independent wikis. As Wikians "refugees" and militants for independant wikis, it's basically against our policies, really sorry about that. Feel free to snatch some information from us, though; we've got nothing whatsoever against sharing information with Wikia/Gamepedia/other hosts' wikis.
PS: There are two active german wikis? --Tigali (talk) 15:51, 15 April 2019 (EDT)
Hello Tigali,
I accept your decision and I understand that you want to stay independent. And to answer your question: Yes there are two german wikis, one FANDOM Wikia and one hosted by Miraheze, but to say that they are active would be completely wrong. The biggest problem is that Dragon Quest is very unpopular in Germany, so I am not be able to find active authors.
Greetings, Königsschleim
Yea, I get that... France is Dragon Quest's most active european fandom, yet I too struggle to find editors. I wish you good luck. Could you give me a link to the Miraheze wiki? I couldn't find it through googling. --Tigali (talk) 08:22, 16 April 2019 (EDT)
Of course. But I just have founded it and I haven't had the time to improve it yet, so you won't find a lot there.
Link: https://dragonquest.miraheze.org/wiki/Hauptseite
Greetings, Königsschleim
Oh. Why creating a second one though? Are you trying to rival the first one, to do something completely different, to migrate the first one's content to the second?--Tigali (talk) 06:54, 17 April 2019 (EDT)
I want to migrate the content, yes.
Greetings, Königsschleim
Have you heard of making a database dump from the Wikia and importing it directly to Miraheze? That's what I did from my Wikia to the independent host. I think the Miraheze staff might even be able to help with that. If you wanna discuss this further, I certainly invite you to join our discord https://discord.gg/n6JKYZC or even contact Ciencia Al Poder from the Spanish Pokémon wiki, who can be considered an expert on migrating data from one place to another (https://www.wikidex.net/wiki/Usuario_discusión:Ciencia_Al_Poder. He speaks English). --Tigali (talk) 09:34, 19 April 2019 (EDT)
Thank you for the information. I have joined the server.
Greetings, Königsschleim
I'm glad this story had a happy ending. Best of luck European DQ fans! (Follower of Light (talk) 19:56, 9 May 2019 (EDT))
Hello Follower of Light,
one last thing. Your Japanese websites are very difficult to translate by Google translator. Did you find a solution for that or do you have the same problems?
Greetings, Königsschleim
I am afraid I struggle with google's translation services as well, and most of the time I can only decipher the translated text due to familiarity with the games--one time I had to print an untranslated page and go to a Japanese restaurant for help. I have heard that Yandex's translation service is more reliable though, so that might be worth a shot: https://translate.yandex.com/ (Follower of Light (talk) 21:40, 27 May 2019 (EDT))

Hi there![edit]

Greetings from SmashWiki! I am here to help provide information on the Smash Bros. end of things, but I also come to you with an inquiry.

Dragon Quest XI Equipment[edit]

Hey there! So I am slowly starting to add equipment info for XI as we are sorely lacking with that game. I don't mind doing it as I'm currently in the process of getting every piece of equipment I can in my own file, but I was wondering if there is a better way to display all that stuff for XI since almost every piece of equipment has quality levels/lots of different stats. I'm using the template that I used for IX's equipment, but modified it a bit to try displaying all that stuff, but I wanted to hear your thoughts if maybe that's the best way I can do it. Aphelion (talk) 15:31, 5 September 2019 (EDT)

Taking a look at how the J-wiki handles things, I plagiarized their table method for XI;
Saintess shield Default +1 +2 +3
Defense 46 47 49 51
Charm 19 20 21 22
Block rate 11%
Special
effect
7% defense against all elements
It's a little crude and trying to add flavor text and recipes would make it stretch out the default block too much, but if we place that information in a paragraph and then use the description header Antiyonder made, it might just work until. If that doesn't look good to you, what about keeping the refinement buffs behind parentheses for IX's template, like this?

 Witch's robe
Defence (forge buffs) +43 (+45,+47,+50)
Magical Might (forge buffs) +18 (+19,+20,+22)
Recipe Narspicious x2 + Wing of bat x2 + Belle cap x2
Rarity ★★☆☆☆
Equipable by Veronica
Buy Price N/a
Sell Price 2,300
Flavor text Garments worn by ancient enchantresses that can help stop the wearer's spells being sealed away.
Notes Chance of being prevented from casting spells reduced by 40%.
That looks better to me because it keeps the template height reasonable without sacrificing clarity or readability. How's it look to you?(Follower of Light (talk) 11:55, 6 September 2019 (EDT))
Yeah, I agree. No reason not to keep using the same template for IX. It's good for displaying a lot of information plus the flavor text and I got used to using it already. Thanks for your input! Aphelion (talk) 15:30, 6 September 2019 (EDT)
Any time, and thanks for helping out so much with XI's equipment and VII's bestiary. Once I wrap up V's bestiary I want to finish the header template for all weapons before tackling XI, so having someone lend a hand like you have is very much appreciated.(Follower of Light (talk) 20:01, 6 September 2019 (EDT))

Imput on uploading via cellphone.[edit]

1. If I take screenshots on my cellphone and wanted to upload them while acknowledging that the contents belong to Square Enix (Like shots of the Float o Copiers from IV when they turn into your party member(s)), would that be fine as far as the wiki policy is concerned?
2 For that matter have there been any good quality pics that came from someone's cellphone? Antiyonder (talk) 19:22, 15 December 2019 (EST)
1. Yes, that copyright acknowledgement will keep the site in the clear legaly speaking. The Den hosts several cell phone screenshots and it's never been hit with a DCMA to my knowledge.
2. I don't believe so, but it is possible to get crystal clear screen shots via phones. It'd be a fine feather in your cap to start thing off and become the trendsetter(Follower of Light (talk) 18:45, 16 December 2019 (EST))
So what do you think of these Float-o-copier pics? Figured of how to crop the battle menu off for the desire parts of the pic. Psaro's copy on the other hand I had to edit since that battle didn't have a single one, thus I had to do a heavier crop job. Antiyonder (talk) 21:52, 16 December 2019 (EST)
They look fantastic! Really good job on all of these, you've gone above and beyond. It may take a bit, but I can edit out the backgrounds and just have the sprites on hand.(Follower of Light (talk) 16:57, 17 December 2019 (EST))
Cool, additionally I'm going to later upload the bestiaries of IV, V, VI and VIII since I can screenshot them from the phone. Antiyonder (talk) 17:06, 17 December 2019 (EST)
You've never been one to shy away from the daunting tasks, but please make sure to pace yourself out. Burnout is never fun, believe me. (Follower of Light (talk) 17:27, 17 December 2019 (EST))
Definitely. Just going to test one of the pics and take it slow for the next few weeks (retitling before uploading). Especially cause I have a lot of comics either checked out from the library or purchased to read. Antiyonder (talk) 18:10, 17 December 2019 (EST)
And last thing for the moment, I uploaded another version of Copy of Psaro with the size more consistent from the others since you mentioned editing the background out. So just pick either upload. Antiyonder (talk) 18:28, 17 December 2019 (EST)
This took much longer than it should have, but that's every copied character on their own page. I'll get the floatocopiers and other mimics set up soon as well, so anytime you want a sprite cleaned up and given transparency just let me know.(Follower of Light (talk) 20:01, 15 January 2020 (EST))
Thanks though I didn't have anymore sprite uploads in mind at the moment. Just adding pics I haven't seen online or had access to prior. Anyway, I am working on modifying the PlayStation article to just cover each of the newer and older consoles since there hasn't been a page made for the PS3 or PS4.Antiyonder (talk) 00:47, 20 January 2020 (EST)
Well after a long delay, I finally upload 'The Big Book of Beasts' gallery on the following pages:
List of enemies in Dragon Quest IV
List of enemies in Dragon Quest V
List of enemies in Dragon Quest VI
So did I implement them well enough? Also I will be reorganizing the list of monsters for V. And sometime before the year ends or early next year I'm going to upload pics of the portrait of prizes at the end of the Fungeon from IV. Maybe like with the Float-o-copier related pics you could edit the article to only show the pic? Antiyonder (talk) 17:48, 17 December 2021 (EST)
The pages look great to me! I've got a superior editing program now, so feel free to send me any images that need to be cleaned up (Follower of Light (talk) 18:47, 17 December 2021 (EST))
Well here's a couple rare uploads from Chapter 3:
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_IV_Mobile_Overworld_Item_Shop.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_IV_Mobile_Overworld_Inn.jpg

Especially good for the Inn and Item shop articles. Antiyonder (talk) 13:49, 18 December 2021 (EST)

How about something like this? https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_IV_Mobile_Overworld_Item_Shop_test_image.jpg
If this is ok then I'll go ahead and touch up the innkeeper and give them both backgroun transparency.(Follower of Light (talk) 12:28, 23 December 2021 (EST))
Almost. If doable also include their shops (Sign, treasure chest, plus the box for the Item shop and Tent for the Inn. Antiyonder (talk) 03:28, 25 December 2021 (EST)
How about now? (Follower of Light (talk) 17:26, 3 January 2022 (EST))

Something I could use your help on currently, templatewise...[edit]

Now something you may or may not notice when I do minor edits is basically trying maintain consistency and lessen redirects as often as possible (i.e. 3DS to Nintendo 3DS), but as far as titles for Dragon Quest games past the first ones go the template to say {{ }}, the item/equipment descriptions, monster bestiary profile and etc go, they all were made before the articles for each game past the first were officially title.

No hurry of course, just whenever/whatever you can. Maybe even showing me as an example of how to make say templates leading directly to Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line rather than Dragon Quest II Antiyonder (talk) 20:57, 23 January 2020 (EST)

Changing the {{}} templates to include the subtitles wouldn't be too hard, it's just a matter of opening a page that uses them, selecting to edit the template and then adding the text. The problem is that not every page link uses those templates, with some being the full game title typed out instead of the short hand { DQ3 }. It would be a big undertaking to go through every page and get the subtitles added in, and since the game pages themselves highlight to subtitles I don't think it would be a good use of time. Lessening redirects as been a big help with organizing the piping between the pages, and I'm very grateful to have someone who can pitch in for tasks like that. This is a fan operation and as such I don't have any authority or tendency to tell people what to do with their time, but I do think that combing through every page to add those subtitles would be a big task with little pay off. (Follower of Light (talk) 13:09, 25 January 2020 (EST))
Well if time is the issue, I can still give it a shot. Anything I can do to help out. At any rate, Molacarthy helped me figure out how edit the templates for abbreviate the titles. At any rate, know how to do the same for description template like the one for the argon heart in VIII? Antiyonder (talk) 18:33, 25 January 2020 (EST)
You're doing a ton to help out and you're worth your weight in gold, so no worries there. For the item template, what can I help you with? (Follower of Light (talk) 20:30, 25 January 2020 (EST))
Thanks. As to the what, is there a way to make sure that the icon (I'm guessing) leads directly to the main article for VIII with leaving a redirect? Antiyonder (talk) 20:39, 25 January 2020 (EST)
Looking at the icons, they all lead to the page they're supposed to. Which ones are giving you problems? (Follower of Light (talk) 21:47, 25 January 2020 (EST))
The Dragon Quest VIII logo in the section, Descriptions. It leads to the DQ VIII article, but it's through Redirect. Antiyonder (talk) 22:16, 25 January 2020 (EST)
That should do it--if it doesn't take effect site-wide in a few hours then I'll hit the purge button and force the update through. If you ever need to edit a template's finer details, all you need to do is open the page editor, scroll to the bottom to find that template and then hit the edit link in parenthesis. You'll have to sift through the guts of that template's page and you won't be able to see the effects on the preview tab, but it will work. (Follower of Light (talk) 01:46, 26 January 2020 (EST))
I'll try to keep that in mind and thank you. The Argon heart on What Links Here shows no evidence of redirect. I found that page earlier, but yeah I had no clue where to begin until I saw your edit change. I will be going through a little at a time this week. First I'll be finishing on the PlayStation 2 to Sony PlayStation. Also, it seems there were no DQ titles for the GameCube, but since all of the GBC/GBA titles can be played on it through the Game Boy Player accessory, do you think a GC article would be appropriate? Antiyonder (talk) 02:25, 26 January 2020 (EST)
Am I missing something here (https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/Template:DQMJII)? I looked at the templates on other articles like say Frou-fry‎ while on my Android phone and it's the only one where the View, Edit and Discussion options aren't viewable, while I'm currently looking at the aforementioned article right now on my laptop with nothing amiss. I'm the one who made the template to begin with, so did I leave anything out? Antiyonder (talk) 21:57, 4 February 2020 (EST)
It might be the browser your phone is using, it's looking alright on my end. How old was the template when you were first looking at it? Sometimes it takes a second for everything to kick in like it's supposed to. Speaking of phones though, could I trouble you with a few screenshot requests? Mainly the sovereigns in III so that I can justify a gallery when I write up all the pages. I don't have any specific lines of dialogue in mind either, so even just standing next to them will done. Of course there's no rush if you decide to take this up either. (Follower of Light (talk) 17:09, 6 February 2020 (EST))
It's been around for a while. I did move it from DQMJ2 to DQMJII (Monday or Tuesday) to make it more consistent with the template scheme of the classic series and to make DQMJ2 a shortcut for typing the full title. Did the same for a bunch of others, but experienced no trouble with the them. Antiyonder (talk) 21:54, 6 February 2020 (EST)

Sovereigns?[edit]

Yeah I'm focusing on other games at the moment, but I plan to do a full replay of III nonetheless. But refresh my memory on what the Sovereigns are again? Antiyonder (talk) 21:54, 6 February 2020 (EST)

The royalty; king of Edina, queen of Isis, dragon queen, faerie queen, etc. By all means take your time, you've been on fire lately and I'm not going to mess with that tempo (Follower of Light (talk) 15:59, 7 February 2020 (EST))
Would you probably be making a similar page for other games in time? Cause I can at least do the same for I-II, IV-VI and VIII in time. Heck, besides VIII having good graphics despite the cell phone limitations, I could probably take some pics of human Trode. Also speaking of frequent edits, can heavier amounts of editing slow down other aspects of the wiki? I removed the redirects from the Knick-knackatory to Knick-knacks, yet despite finishing that edit at 1:04 AM this page (https://dragon-quest.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Knick-knacks&limit=500) still suggests that I haven't cleared them. Usually these things seemed to clear up in half of 24 hours, but as of posting this it's 11:51 PM. Antiyonder (talk) 02:51, 9 February 2020 (EST)
It can take a while for the changes to stick now and again, but if it's ever giving you trouble you can use the Purge option to force the new edit to take effect faster. When you make your edit, go to the history page and highlight the webpage on your search bar and hit right until you see "&action=history". replace the word history with purge and then hit enter, you'll be taken to a new page where you can purge the history and force the new edit to take precedent. Looking at the knick-knackatory page, the new redirects take me to the section but not the specific item, but that's fine since any reader can take it up from there.
I do plan on getting all the NPCs in each game their own pages, even if it would be brief, and leave the list of characters as a directory so if you want me to work on people from a particular title I can jump into that first. (Follower of Light (talk) 09:24, 9 February 2020 (EST))

Another thing of modifications I could use help on...[edit]

Namely removing redirects to Tombola ticket and Boomerang (weapon). For the most part no problem, but to give some example of what I'm looking for:

No hurry, just check them out when you can. Antiyonder (talk) 23:34, 7 February 2020 (EST)

The boomerang icon gave me some trouble, and when I uploaded one for the modified link it failed to appear unless you clicked on it directly. It'll just have to be soemthing the wiki lives with, but that shouldn't be a problem since readers can make the logistical leap from the disambiguation page immediately. As for those location attribute icon templates, I've always found those to be as distasteful as the icons for door types and about as useful--I can just as easily slip the information into the descriptive paragraphs and have it flow much more naturally thank a bunch of clunky boxes shoved in at the very end of an article. I can't seem to get that particular edit to stick either, so I'll just be working my way through the pages and removing them as I update the monster names, install the weapon templates, and so forth. (Follower of Light (talk) 08:05, 8 February 2020 (EST))
Maybe not. Whoever did the Lakanaba page found a way around the Boomerang thing I think.Antiyonder (talk) 15:14, 8 February 2020 (EST)
Nice, everything's turned out well in the end then(Follower of Light (talk) 17:36, 8 February 2020 (EST))

Capital question.[edit]

Not going to link to them from here, but when doing a minor grinding session on V, I noticed that Yggdrasil Leaf and Flametang Boomerang weren't capitalized completely, rather the game presents them as Yggdrasil leaf and Flametang boomerang. Oversight on the wiki or do some games capitalize Leaf and Boomerang? Antiyonder (talk) 16:20, 5 March 2020 (EST)

Looking at V, it almost seems random which words are capitalized and which are not--the herb in medicinal herb isn't, but the regale in pallium regale is even though it is not a propper noun. I wouldn't worry about it too much. (Follower of Light (talk) 17:04, 5 March 2020 (EST))
It's no for me to work on. Especially not all the redirects on them have been fixed. Antiyonder (talk) 18:18, 5 March 2020 (EST)

Discord-Server[edit]

Hello Follower of Light,

I am Hydrotoxinlaser - maybe you remember me - and I am the administrator of the two German Dragon Quest Wikis powerded by Miraheze and FANDOM.

I have created a Discord-Server to improve the communication between the authors of our Wikis. Actually I have created it for the German Wikis only, but I thought about it and want to ask if your Wiki or the (active) members of your Wiki want to join our Discord-Server.

Of course you can think about it. If you want to join, I will send you the invitation link.

Greetings --Königsschleim (talk) 13:48, 29 March 2020 (EDT)

It sounds like a good idea to me, please send an invite whenever is convenient. (Follower of Light (talk) 19:19, 30 March 2020 (EDT))
Great! Here is the invitation link: https://discord.gg/J7ytZ8d
Everybody of this wiki, who wants to join, is welcome.
Greetings --Königsschleim (talk) 13:47, 31 March 2020 (EDT)
And joined; talk to you guys soon. (Follower of Light (talk) 16:23, 1 April 2020 (EDT))

Presentation Standards[edit]

Hey there, I've had no interaction with a user by the name of limp bizkit. Feel free to revert anything in the standards you don't agree with. You have my support. Any changes should likely be discussed in a talk page before changing them anyway. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 22:13, 4 May 2020 (EDT)

I was just trying to make wiki look better? Limp Bizkit (talk) 23:11, 4 May 2020 (EDT)
...and that is not a bad thing, but making changes to things like templates when you are relatively new to a wiki are often viewed as stepping over the line. For template changes or major category updates, use talk pages to submit ideas first. For templates, create an updated template using user sub-pages and ask for feedback about whether it is an improvement over the current template in use. A lot of your edits were clean up related, and those are very welcome, as there is a lot of stuff to clean up. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 23:36, 4 May 2020 (EDT)
Gotcha, thank you. Sorry for going so edit crazy as if it were attempted takeover of wiki. Limp Bizkit (talk) 23:41, 4 May 2020 (EDT)

Admin[edit]

After some discussions on Discord, I've promoted you to admin on the wiki. I'm not sure if you really want that or not, heh, but there is no question that you have made a ton of great updates to the wiki over the years. You are without a doubt a major contributor to how things are done around here, and deserve to be viewed as being an authority on content. This new role adds a few new capabilities, but none that I can think of that are all that useful. I do not have any expectation that you have to do anything more than whatever you currently want to do. I also wanted to make it clear to the Discord crowd that you are welcome to represent the wiki in any promotion/collaboration discussions and/or private servers. Any topics or discussions that you would prefer to avoid, or anything related to the backend administration of the site, feel free to continue to send my way. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 23:30, 4 May 2020 (EDT)

Slipping into the conversation
Congratulations! --Tigali (talk) 10:59, 22 July 2020 (EDT)

Trying some new cellphone shots.[edit]

Been playing Dragon Quest of the Stars and while I didn't think to take pics early on, I started doing so when I got to areas containing story elements of the early games. Namely the profile pics of characters who have seldom artwork of them like say the King of Aliahan. Sent two photos to test out which types you think we could work with. The zoomed in version with the name still present or the unaltered photo:

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_Stars_Android_King_of_Aliahan.jpg
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_Stars_Android_King_of_Aliahan_2.jpg

Let me know what you think.Antiyonder (talk) 00:34, 29 July 2020 (EDT)

Both of these look great! I think going with the full screen capture would work better, because then I can extract the dialogue box along with the character art for a more focused picture--that is, taking the second image you've uploaded and adding a transparent background to everything around the dialogue box and the character art extending beyond the screen boarder. That may take some time on my part, but I know I can clear out all the unneeded info like the boss detail in the upper background and then upload the modification as a new version of the file. Please be extra careful to make sure none of your phone's personal data is accidentally captured in these screen shots though, even small details can slip in easily. (Follower of Light (talk) 21:00, 29 July 2020 (EDT))
Advice heeded. What kind of info are you talking about and how specifically would you say to make sure I'm not leaking personal data? Antiyonder (talk) 22:36, 29 July 2020 (EDT)
Here is a good example of what I mean, and the article covers ways to remove data in existing photos and prevent it from happening with new ones. As for the profile pics themselves, go with whichever ones you want first and I can take it from there--play favorites! (Follower of Light (talk) 17:30, 31 July 2020 (EDT))

About the edit you've removed[edit]

I added this based on Dragon Quest II's enemy table (see Slime as an example) where Fire Resistance includes Woosh. Is it that Fire Resistance does not working due to a bug or glitch, or did I worded it wrong? (--2406:3003:2005:3FAB:64FE:B7C7:C812:8FF8 07:04, 16 August 2020 (EDT))

No you've got the right idea in that all attack spells are lumped under "fire" in the game's programming, its just that the way resistance works in the first four games is based on the chance of a monster dodging a spell altogether instead of taking less damage; woosh will always deal 17~33 damage if it hits. I know its a dumb idea and in all honesty squenix should have tweaked the formula to follow later games, but for whatever reason it was decided to stick with the original system. Sorry about the confusion. (Follower of Light (talk) 10:20, 16 August 2020 (EDT))

Catching up on DQS pics.[edit]

If you still wanted to edit them yourself for character pics (like you did for those Morph based monsters). I'll do 5-6 pics a day. Antiyonder (talk) 18:43, 19 September 2020 (EDT)

Sure, I'm always up for touching up pics and the ones you capture are always the easiest. Don't feel that you have to do 5~6 pics a day though, take your time with them and go with a pace that's comfortable. (Follower of Light (talk) 19:11, 19 September 2020 (EDT))
Noted, though I'm doing it for myself cause I built up a whole thing of photos and wanted to do some space clearing. Antiyonder (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2020 (EDT)
Ok, here's a test image I threw together--
https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:Pimiko test.jpg
I thought that crunching down the focus to only include the text box and portrait would be best, and by removing the background details it would draw attention on to the art work and have the bonus effect of resembling the NES games. How does it look to you?(Follower of Light (talk) 10:18, 20 September 2020 (EDT))
Looks good to me. Antiyonder (talk) 16:06, 21 September 2020 (EDT)
Also, some characters will get multiple pics due to different facial expressions made. Antiyonder (talk) 13:45, 22 September 2020 (EDT)
Sure thing, the gallery tab has plenty of space for extra expressions. It may take me a second to edit them all, but don't let that halt your upload speed. Once I finish a character I can go ahead and add them to their page. Thanks again for doing this! (Follower of Light (talk) 16:30, 22 September 2020 (EDT))
At any rate, you can just look at my recent contributions to keep track of uploaded material. Antiyonder (talk) 01:25, 23 September 2020 (EDT)
Upload the other variants of Ortega from Stars. Feel free to ignore any you deem unnecessary but while I've missed some pic opportunities in general I tried to be as thorough as possible. Antiyonder (talk) 02:54, 27 September 2020 (EDT)
There's no such thing as a redundancy when these characters have almost never been drawn before, its all good. (Follower of Light (talk) 14:11, 27 September 2020 (EDT))

Friend code offer and links of previous pics gathered.[edit]

My Dragon Quest of the Stars code is ABNJYJ3578 if you play it or still do if you want to friend up. Going to put it on my profile shortly.

Also going to upload more pics soon to clear space in my folder, especially since I'm caught up on the story content until the next update. But for easy access to my first set of pics needed for updating so they aren't buried:

Warning: Spoilers!
Click expand to view content

Just for faster, easy access. Antiyonder (talk) 17:18, 1 October 2020 (EDT)

Sorry, life got in the way for a bit there and I've not been able to edit as quickly as I should. I appreciate the offer for the friend code on Stars but my phone is a toaster; the reason I'm so grateful that you've been uploading these images is because I don't have the means, and as far as I can tell you're the only one in the West who has been doing so. I'll hack through these tonight and get them on the proper pages.(Follower of Light (talk) 19:42, 2 October 2020 (EDT))
Honestly I'll be happy to put them on the proper pages. I just need you for the altering of the photos since that's not something I can do or at least yet Antiyonder (talk) 02:28, 4 October 2020 (EDT)
OH and last of the older ones: https://dragon-quest.org/w/index.php?title=File:DQ_Stars_Android_King_Aliahan.jpg

Antiyonder (talk) 03:45, 4 October 2020 (EDT)

So Final Fantasy...[edit]

First off, still no hurry on the alterations to my pics, but do you want me to continue sending the rest or wait until you modified the rest?

Also, I've been wondering since DQ became represented in Smash Ultimate, you think Super Mario and Final Fantasy would merit articles on the wiki? You know since they both crossed over with DQ in Itadaki Street (series) games?

Not to mention it was announced on Stars that they would be doing a crossover event with Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. Plus DQ enemies I believe appeared in Mobius Final Fantasy. Mind you I could do some work on the Mario page, FF isn't something I'm as knowledgeable on or Itadaki Street, so others could probably help in those regards. Antiyonder (talk) 02:07, 12 October 2020 (EDT)

I think having Mario and FF pages would be a rational idea as the series have appeared together beyond smash brothers. I can handle the data for Dissidia as well as Mobius and I can figure out more for Itadaki street. Sorry about the delay in getting the edited pictures up, life threw me for a loop last week but I've got half of the last set done already and I'm cutting into the remainder. I grab every image you upload in a cluster so that they don't get lost, so don't worry about overwhelming me or anything like that--this moves at whatever pace you're comfy with. (Follower of Light (talk) 19:22, 12 October 2020 (EDT))
No problem. Just wanted to be sure as again clearing up the phone. Have over 300 pics saved and still have some I plan to take later on. Also more an indulgent idea, but how about Pokémon? Besides the heavy usage in Smash, there's the talk about it's mechanics being inspired by DQ (Like the Mad cap being the reason trading exists) and in turn I believe it being say the reason that in turn Dragon Quest Monsters series exists. Antiyonder (talk) 19:59, 12 October 2020 (EDT)
Actually I think I might start FF with what I can on Stars and anything missing you can do, plus I will focus on crossover photos for the article. Antiyonder (talk) 03:33, 13 October 2020 (EDT)
Pokemon is a bit of s stretch at first glance, but if its done in such a way that it shows how both series influenced one another then I think it can work well. DQM is a direct response to Red and Green's popularity, so that connection is inarguable. Should be done with this set of images by tomorrow evening.(Follower of Light (talk) 21:26, 15 October 2020 (EDT))
So how would you say those pages look to you? Had help with Alex95 on Super Mario, and did the best I could so far with Pokémon (The inspiration section I copy/pasted from other pages) and Final Fantasy. Antiyonder (talk) 21:53, 17 October 2020 (EDT)
Oh and the PM trivia was also copyed from the monster pages mentioned. Antiyonder (talk) 21:54, 17 October 2020 (EDT)
They look great! Especially pointing out the voice actor connections on the Pokemon page. I'll do some research and see how Final Fantasy and DQ bounced off each other prior to the company mergers.(Follower of Light (talk) 22:09, 17 October 2020 (EDT))
So while I don't have it in me to do a summary of the Stars at the time, do you think having enough pics for a gallery (like for Cyril and Gaius) would justify starting an article? Antiyonder (talk) 23:08, 19 October 2020 (EDT)
Just checking more time, you sure it's no trouble if I get a heavy amount a pics loaded? No trouble for me as again I'm working to empty my folder out and if anything it becomes less work if I keep said game pic folder light anyway. Antiyonder (talk) 14:40, 22 October 2020 (EDT)
Its no trouble at all, having them uploaded here en masse means I can't miss any of them. As for Cyril and Gaius, I don't see how being in a mobile phone game invalidates their status as DQ characters. The fact that all the important NPCs have their own illustrations makes it easier to see who deserves a page as well, so I'd say most of them will end up with their own before long. If you know of any longplay videos or the like, I can watch those and write the summaries from there.(Follower of Light (talk) 20:47, 22 October 2020 (EDT))

Anyway,[edit]

Take your time on the edits. I only uploaded as frequently as I did cause I had over 300 pics in my folder and wanted to trim down. Not done uploading photos, but now I don't have a huge backlog to clear out. But yeah still good to just go through several at a time so that they can all be articled without missing any. Antiyonder (talk) 23:20, 25 October 2020 (EDT)

Also whether they debuted in Stars or not, I'll use the game pages' gallery section for Monsters that don't have their own page yet. Antiyonder (talk) 20:18, 1 November 2020 (EST)
Sorry for the late response, but that sounds like a good idea for monsters lacking their own pages. I'm about half done with the current set of pictures. (Follower of Light (talk) 20:54, 1 November 2020 (EST))
I'll be applying your recent edited pics tomorrow. Just been having some me time and doing some of my page cleaning stuff for the Gargoyles wiki articles too. Anyone the order you do the file edits is of course your call, just if I can request one to be done as soon as possible is this (https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_Stars_Android_Heavenly_Brides.jpg). I planned the Heavenly Bride page sooner and meant to take this picture myself, but it slipped my mind. But this one I'm not just using it only for usual gallery filler. I aim for it to be the head pic of that article. Antiyonder (talk) 00:02, 25 November 2020 (EST)
How does it look now? I think its a little too small, but if I resize it the quality dips by a lot. Would you like the brides separated into individual images as well?(Follower of Light (talk) 17:16, 25 November 2020 (EST))
Size is perfect, and no I'm fine with them being on one pic. Thanks. Antiyonder (talk) 17:38, 25 November 2020 (EST)
Just to be sure, I notice some cases like files of Paula 1-3 and Setesh the Punisher 1-2 weren't uploaded. That's fine, I just wanted to know if you go through my uploads in a particular order or at random. Either is fine, just curious. Thanks so far on the edits, going to apply them to article tomorrow or Tuesday. Antiyonder (talk) 18:58, 29 November 2020 (EST)
Putting these up for a deletion since the Metal king slime pics I took from Stars has a good view of Liquid metal slimes:
Just figured I point it out so you don't spend any editing time on them. Antiyonder (talk) 04:13, 5 December 2020 (EST)
Sorry again for taking so long to reply, but the order I'm going in is how they were originally posted; I open the file in a new table, download it, and move on to the next. Once I have everything edited down I do the same for uploading the new versions.(Follower of Light (talk) 21:43, 7 December 2020 (EST))
Another thing is that I don't think I can trim the images with the slot machine layout, as that would break the image's cohesion too much. There's a small handful of overworld shots that have this problem as well, along with that goofy dressed up powie yowie, but its mostly the ones with the casino theme. (Follower of Light (talk) 17:29, 10 December 2020 (EST))
OK then. I actually considered using them as is so this just reaffirms that choice. Antiyonder (talk) 21:56, 10 December 2020 (EST)

DQ Status page merger?[edit]

Status effect and List of status conditions don't seem all that different. Plus the latter has no pages leading to it. Going to think it over while I take care of other Wiki edits, but might merge them sooner or later. Any objection? Antiyonder (talk) 18:19, 5 November 2020 (EST)

Going to get back to business soon and...[edit]

Adding the files to articles and new files later in the month. Anyway, not sure how much milage it would get, but I was thinking of making an article "List of references to Dragon Quest", especially since on the Western Side it's not the most acknowledged. But one thing that brought it on was my marathoning of the cartoon Adventure Time (through Hulu and a the Complete DVD collection). An episode titled the diary started out to my surprise of a game with a battle scene exactly like Dragon Quest, plus some official animatics from the final seasons have some DQ music playing. If nothing else I could add plugs to my Captain N: The Game Master and Nintendo Power page. Antiyonder (talk) 00:33, 10 January 2021 (EST)

Just chiming in to say I did just that on the French wiki (https://wikidragonquest.fr/index.php?title=Liste_des_références_à_Dragon_Quest_dans_d%27autres_médias), although I haven't uploaded it in a while because there's so many it's hard to keep track. --Tigali (talk) 02:24, 11 January 2021 (EST)
Well Follower, here it is: List of references to Dragon Quest Antiyonder (talk) 22:03, 11 January 2021 (EST)
Articles like this are always fun to read, and I can double check the Japanese wiki to find references most Westerners would miss. The page layout look great as well, and any extra piping between it and the pages to the other series will generate good synergy.(Follower of Light (talk) 23:41, 15 January 2021 (EST))
Able to get a pic from the Amphibia episode mentioned in the article. Added to the gallery as well to Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line. Antiyonder (talk) 23:33, 15 June 2021 (EDT)
And got a pic of the reference from Adventure Time.Antiyonder (talk) 16:35, 16 June 2021 (EDT)
I'd heard of the Shin Getter Robo reference in Amphibia, but DQ getting into Adventure Time is news to me. Sorry its taken so long, but I've caught up with all the Stars images you've uploaded (that have the border at least). I've got a new image editor, so it'll much easier to quickly work through bulk image sets now. (Follower of Light (talk) 12:06, 27 June 2021 (EDT))
Easing up for the next few days and will help out for it, but I noticed Soulspawn was stated to have debuted in Dragon Quest V, when they definitely were in Dragon Quest IV in the NES port (Doorway to Nadiria). Antiyonder (talk) 20:07, 21 January 2022 (EST)
My bad. I thought I had clear proof if only cause of my 'The Big Book of Beasts' pic which mentions a similar monster Demonspawn. I guess it's just a case of monsters just barely differing. But yeah even the Kanji (Woodus' Monster Wiki) translates differently. Fixed, while keeping some other edits. Antiyonder (talk) 20:43, 21 January 2022 (EST)
I feel you on that one, I've still got PTSD from trying to sort out all the Shade, Shadow, and Silhouette sprites. People may complain when the pallet swaps are very gaudy or too loudly colored, but it makes it easier to tell them apart.(Follower of Light (talk) 13:03, 22 January 2022 (EST))
Unsure about editing these types of pages, so do you think when not busy, you could edit the Dragon Quest IV Transcript page to remove the redirect to the Pandemonic Equipment page? Here's the text you can copy/paste to make it easy:
Pandemonic Equipment#Pandemonic shield|Pandemonic shield
Pandemonic Equipment#Pandemonic sword|Pandemonic sword
Pandemonic Equipment#Pandemonic armour|Pandemonic armour
Pandemonic Equipment#Pandemonic helm|Pandemonic helm
Thanks! Antiyonder (talk) 22:33, 25 January 2022 (EST)
Also I made several templates for Psaro (Character). One which if a spoiler cover can be done refers to him directly, while say equipment pages one template refers to him as the 9th Chosen One. Still have a lot of edits before I do more for IV centered articles, but would you say that is a good label to avoid spoilers? Antiyonder (talk) 23:25, 25 January 2022 (EST)

Opinions on the Template Shortcuts?[edit]

User talk:Trig_Jegman#Well

Do you agree on them being more trouble than they're worth? Antiyonder (talk) 15:50, 26 February 2021 (EST)

I like having them for lengthier page titles, such as typing {{|DQ4|}} instead of the whole name and the subtitle. I can't see any scenario in which they'd become a problem so long as the truncations are kept distinct. I have a few personal projects to wrap up first, such as finishing XI's dragons, but after that I'll be getting back to the Stars images. (Follower of Light (talk) 12:44, 27 February 2021 (EST))
Still am behind on adding the edited pics to the articles, plus I was slow on uploading the Christmas related pics myself. So I share slowness blame myself:-) Antiyonder (talk) 03:28, 28 February 2021 (EST)

Artwork for DQIX equipment[edit]

Hey, I recently started scanning a DQIX guidebook for equipment artwork. I'm doing my best with image quality. I'm currently uploading them to the French wiki, and y'all are welcome to check the gallery of new files and use them if you want.--Tigali (talk) 09:02, 6 March 2021 (EST)

Thanks a million! I know scanning so many pages can be a pain, but trust me--your work is going to be appreciate and look a hundred times better than that ancient scan of the guidebook that was just a series of cell phone pictures.(Follower of Light (talk) 20:43, 8 March 2021 (EST))
Thanks! To be honest, it's been going rather well, maybe better than I expected. I know my scanner did a shit job at rendering the color black when I scanned my DQXI artbook, which is very frustrating, but it seems to work fine here. The cell phone pictures of IX equipment you currently have are from the Bradygames guidebook, actually, that I own too and used to scan as well with eh results, and are way smaller—I use the second Japanese guidebook, the one with the night sky on the cover, I believe some of yours come from there as well (here's a very handy list of all the DQ books in Japan). I don't plan on redoing the artwork scans of items that looked identical in VIII (I've actually been using your smoothened scans all this time, those do look better than what I can do) but some have slight differences, notably markings, between those two games: I'll be covering them. I'm scanning two pages at a time, but actually, cutting out the artwork into a transparent png is the most time-consuming thing because of the unfortunate shadow effect they used that's messing with my software, so I'm uploading one at a time (and often, the page has yet to be created, so I'm making its basic structure at the same time). And, weirdly enough, the alchemiracle equipment doesn't appear to have its own artwork? It's in neither guides at least. It may appear somewhere in XI-related stuff, but XI changed all the colors apart from the first evolution stage so there's that. Anyway, the gallery of new files is here if you want a handy link. Happy hunting ^^ --Tigali (talk) 22:12, 10 March 2021 (EST)
These look incredible! Thank you so much for tackling this project, all of these have great resolution for such small source images. I'm going to start slicing up the digital version of XI's illustration artbook beginning with the characters, so just say the word if you've got someone or something specific in mind for me to isolate first.(Follower of Light (talk) 08:34, 14 March 2021 (EDT))
Digital versionof the Japanese artbook? Yeah, I could've sworn I saw that 'round the internet, but never could get my hands on it. I own the physical version because I'm a collector, but a digital one would be way way better. I could help you with the uncut files too, if you'd like. As for my priorities, well...they'd be entirely preference-based, not based in any sort of logic, except perhaps...the images with a lot of black in them? Like Don Rodrigo's butler, which turned friggin awful despite my best attempts at correcting color balance and contrast. In other news, I'm still adding stuff from the collector's edition artbook from time to time (some of it being there already), and idk if you heard of komodoxeno's google drive with in-game images that he cracked from the game files? Coz he said it was OK to use that, too.--Tigali (talk) 12:17, 14 March 2021 (EDT)
So I used some of the pics you uploaded about Jasper. I got rid of some of the leftover white stuff: https://wikidragonquest.fr/Fichier:Jasper_Mortégor.png https://wikidragonquest.fr/Fichier:Jasper_enfant.png --Tigali (talk) 11:36, 20 March 2021 (EDT)
Sorry for the delay, but here's Servantes for you : the artwork and the render. And thanks for helping clean up that Jasper image! I have not heard of komodoxeno's cracking drive, but it sounds good (Follower of Light (talk) 18:18, 1 April 2021 (EDT))
Ah, don't worry, do it at your own pace! And I still can help with the cut out if it buys you time. I only will use the concept art in the page at this stage (I redid the cutout too, and same for Alizarin) but when we'll get to creating image gallery pages the render will come in handy too. If you'll permit me being insufferable, the images I look most forward too are Derk, Opal, Healijah (in the section at the end w/ battle artwork), Dora-in-Grey, the doge (puppy Sandy), the Doge (of Gondolia) and [whatever Erik's MMA partner's name is in English]. But honestly, I'm in no rush, the IX equipment will keep me busy for a WHILE lol. Here's the drive! It has a ton of stuff. Also, I have a file of character artwork from Stars, real big, with all the poses to the waist down and most if not all of the characters, including events, if that's something you're interested in.--Tigali (talk) 20:10, 1 April 2021 (EDT)
So, I feel a little dumb for spending all that time scanning a physical book... Cause now I own a digital copy of the DQIX guidebook. So now everything will be better quality. ^^--Tigali (talk) 17:59, 17 April 2021 (EDT)
UPDATE: saw I had a 10€ coupon for the website until May, so I took the XI artbook as well. Won't bother you with it now ^^
Its all good, and don't feel bad about discovering easier ways to rip images. I'm about half way done with Builders 2's icons and will have those uploaded quickly once the set is complete. (Follower of Light (talk) 10:49, 24 April 2021 (EDT))
Awesome! I had just started creating a lot of pages for B2. Woah, it's about 1300 items ^^' Bon courage !--Tigali (talk) 11:21, 24 April 2021 (EDT)
There's a few hundred missing item icons for Builders 2, but I think I have good quality on the remaining 900. I do have a question about your galaxy axe scan though: was that from the IX guide book or from XI's book? I'm looking at IX's guide and the images are crystal clear, but still a tad small. I'm SO sorry I missed your message! It is from IX's guidebook but not from the weapon section, it was used as an illustration elsewhere in the book, hence why it was bigger there and why I used that one.--Tigali (talk) 06:49, 22 June 2021 (EDT)
No worries, and it must have been in a different book than the one I scanned. I'll get around to all three of IX's books soon enough. I've got everything I've scanned so far linked on my main page. (Follower of Light (talk) 12:06, 27 June 2021 (EDT))

Party![edit]

Hiya!

We had a meeting on the French wiki tonight and among other stuff, we decreated that it would be nice to have a friendly chat someday with our lovely neighbors. So, since we all speak English, we'd like to invite you all to our Discord one day sometime in the evening (the afternoon for America) for voice (chit-)chat, possibly playing online free games, or sharing wiki ressources/interlanguage stuff more directly. Is that something any of you'd be interested in?--Tigali (talk) 17:29, 16 October 2021 (EDT)

That sounds like a lot of fun! I'm sure most of the other editors would like to participate as well, and there's also the SEIWA server members on top of that. Did you have a specific time frame in mind? (Follower of Light (talk) 14:32, 17 October 2021 (EDT))
We haven't set a date, but we usually do wiki events on Saturdays as it's most people timeframe for social activities, at least here. Maybe I should get a poll up and running? But I don't know where to share it apart from here, so it's be great if you could help relay it! I am on the ABXY VG Wikis Discord Server, but I never saw a Dragon Quest channel and thus never got a chance to interact ^^'--Tigali (talk) 15:59, 17 October 2021 (EDT)
Message sent, see you on the server! For verification's sake, my avatar has red hair and fangs.(Follower of Light (talk) 22:00, 18 October 2021 (EDT))

Robbin' 'Ood and Dirkandor (And for possible theories mistaken as canon)=[edit]

While doing recent editing I found in List of locations in Dragon Quest II a claim that Dirkandor was founded by Robbin' 'Ood from III. Or as the article suggested, Kandar. Fellow GameFAQs poster behindtheword seems doubtful and my own searching, best I could find is assumption that the bolded segment of Dirkandor is close to RH's old localization name as an indicator. Antiyonder (talk) 23:27, 30 January 2022 (EST)

Looking at the Japanese wiki, this notion came from the novelization of II and is not supported anywhere else. I~VII had novelizations that would tweak certain details, like in IV's case it states that Ragnar was looking for the Hero for a decade.(Follower of Light (talk) 15:38, 31 January 2022 (EST))
The DQ1-3 novels were recently translated in Spanish and I got them. I just took a look, and in page 176 it's mentioned that Robbin did indeed found the town, in the novelization at least. The novel calls the Dirkandor castle the manor of the 'Ood family. Maybe adding the link between RH and the city as trivia in the Dirkandor article will be enough, mentioning it's only in the novel.--LiquidMetal (talk) 17:26, 31 January 2022 (EST)

E-mail confirmation[edit]

Heya so I have a bunch of Dragon Quest monster art that I would like to update, just created my account earlier today but It says I need to verify it. Only problem is... I haven't received a confirmation e-mail at all and I am using the correct e-mail too.--Moonboy65 (talk) 18:39, 27 February 2022 (EST)

Hello Again[edit]

Just letting you know, thanks to your amazing find on archive.org, I’m uploading DQVC costume images that were missing. If this is a problem, please let me know. I hope you are well!

Update: I’m afraid I’ve made a terrible mistake. I mistakenly uploaded a picture of the Disturbin' turban instead of the Gothan turban. Sorry about that. Fixing the page now; can you please delete the image? icysugarspike (talk) 18:39, 30 August 2022 (EST)

Oh that's my...er, good friend's archive.org page--if you have any requests for specific books I can send them his way and if they're on bookwalker then it won't be any trouble to get them ripped. I can't believe you're back my man, this is an incredible start to a week that's already looking stellar for me. In regards to images though, the user Tigali has a ton of IX images cut out already so that may save you a few minutes. (Follower of Light (talk) 18:55, 30 August 2022 (EDT))

It’s nice to be back. Many changes have occurred, but my love of DQ will never fade. Thanks for the info, my friend. It’s good to hear from you again! icysugarspike (talk) 21:15, 30 August 2022 (EST)

Saddened to hear about the wiki. I only just found out, although I don’t know all the details. Perhaps, through Discord, we can keep in touch on all things Dragon Quest. - icysugarspike 12:11, 3 September 2022 (EDT)

Now I'm working on taking pics for the Erdrick trilogy[edit]

Most of it I can do without problem, but:

https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQ_Android_Slime.jpg

I was going to suggest maybe you edit everything out except the square containing the monster(s) in question. Antiyonder (talk) 20:20, 14 November 2022 (EST)

Sorry for the delayed response, but is this necessary? The backgrounds are ripped straight from III's snes remake, and woodus should have the ripped ios sprites by themselves already.(Follower of Light (talk) 22:20, 19 November 2022 (EST))

Speaking of Woodus actually: https://www.woodus.com/den/gallery/graphics/dq8ps2/maps_overworld/DQ8_Cows_Map.webp

Anyway to covert this map to use for the wiki? I thought it would be handy for the World of Light and for a possible cow article or if not in the gallery for the Fresh milk page. Antiyonder (talk) 15:34, 20 December 2022 (EST)

How does this look to you?
If you ever need to convert a webp file, you can use ezgif.com here to do the work for you and the site has a ton of other features as well.(Follower of Light (talk) 21:28, 21 December 2022 (EST))
Great thanks and I will keep that in mind. Maybe double check on Woodus exclusive stuff that isn't on here yet. Antiyonder (talk) 04:49, 22 December 2022 (EST)

Glitch or malfunction[edit]

So articles like Persistence, Burland and any that have shop Templates seem to have mention of an error within. Infact, tried uploading some new Dragon Quest V pics and couldn't. Antiyonder (talk) 15:54, 7 March 2023 (EST)

There's a bug in the mediawiki program, it's not just affecting you specifically. I'm going to get this straightened up as soon as possible, the research I've done has shown people tackle this before so it's not a brand new error either. (Follower of Light (talk) 20:27, 7 March 2023 (EST))
Well good to be back in the pic business again. Oh and if you want to see where my obsessions outside Dragon Quest have taken me over the years: https://www.deviantart.com/antiyonder/gallery
My collection of comics, DVDs and such. Antiyonder (talk) 00:58, 15 March 2023 (EDT)
Yeah, I'm sorry it took so long for the issue to be sorted out but thank you for pitching in to help with all these screenshots. Going off of your page, i take it you're a hasbro fan? (Follower of Light (talk) 22:55, 16 March 2023 (EDT))
Transformers and My Little Pony mainly. Occasional G.I.Joe and I do have Jem and the Holograms on DVD. Power Rangers I've been into since the autumn of 93 long before Hasbrouck, Nickelodeon and Disney had involvement with it. Still enjoy a lot of Disney Channel toons like Amphibia, The Owl House, The Ghost and Molly McGee and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Antiyonder (talk) 23:39, 16 March 2023 (EDT)
And yeah, a lot of the Canadian VAs with some DQ credits, I'm often mentioning any My Little Pony productions they're in. And yeah, with Hiro Kanagawa, we have someone who did a bit of DQ and Star Trek incidentally. Antiyonder (talk) 21:03, 18 June 2023 (EDT)

The word "etymology"[edit]

Hello.

I saw you reverted my edits. I am very sorry for that.

Shall we discuss here: https://www.woodus.com/forums/topic/41660-the-word-etymology/

The Wikipedia page about Etymology is very technical, indeed (external link). This Youtube video (external link) explains what etymology is in just 20 seconds (starting from 1:43).

Thank you and best regards, --Abacos (talk) 19:01, 14 August 2023 (EDT)

The use of the word Etymology as the section header for the origins of terms, names, and so forth has been standard practice since the adoption of the wiki format at large.(Follower of Light (talk) 23:55, 15 August 2023 (EDT))

Your answer is very kind, but if it is true, I have to admit that I am really baffled.

This is a big case of "Artistic Licence: Linguistics". Tvtropes.org explains it in a nice way (link) :

most people recognize that when dealing with questions of physics, biology, chemistry, etc., they need to ask an expert, whereas with linguistics, many people don't even realize that there are experts to be asked.

Someone, years ago, had his/her own personal definition of "etymology", and no one cared whether it was correct or not. Is that so?

Indeed, if you remove all the "buzzwords" from the actual definition of etymology, you are left with "Etymology studies the origin of [...] words", but that is not etymology anymore (not to mention that the difference between "word" and "name" is quite subtle). ---Abacos (talk) 09:43, 16 August 2023 (EDT)

If I may be of assistance, my degree actually includes lingustics! College-level linguistics and grammar is focused on moving away from prescriptivism and more towards descriptivism, i.e. observing a text corpus or a group of speakers and making observations on them to determine what words mean, not trying to enforce what they should mean. So a linguist would definitely not frown upon the use of the word etymology in the way that it is used here, if that's what you were getting at.
From my perspective, "etymology" as we use it is perfectly acceptable (i.e. the concept that the writer of the word seeks to communicate to the recipient and what the recipient understands is the same) and, if I can use my own recollection as a corpus, very common for wikis and even beyond. Sorry, had to simplify a lot, besides my degree is in another language. Anyway, I see no cause to change it. Words evolve with time and cultural context, and this is not that big of a departure?
Actually, I kind of struggle to see how you conceptualise our use on one hand and the various definitions you sent on the other, differently. Sure, etymology can explain the changes that lead to the spelling and pronunciation of a word, but it's a byproduct of how words are formed in natural languages; if it was the actual focus, you'd be thinking more of phonology and graphology. Etymology is just the study of the "true origin" of a word, so of course in natural languages it comes from gradual spelling and speaking changes and that's what's studied, but in conlangs and neologism, we'd be looking at the root words that have been portmanteau'd or otherwise been used to make a new term. Not sure if I'm making myself clear.--Tigali (talk) 17:56, 16 August 2023 (EDT)

I am using a table because I am going to use several indentations.

By the way, I am afraid that the following statement shows an underlying difference in the approach to the problem at hand:

>>> Words evolve with time and cultural context

The above is a "Common Law" statement (if definition and common usage disagree, definition shall be updated). I come from a "Civil Law" country (written rules and definitions, not common usage, determine whether something is correct or wrong).

>>> I kind of struggle to see how you conceptualise our use on one hand and the various definitions you sent on the other

Easy: your use does not match the definitions at all. Evidence: the contents of your etymology sections are completely different from the etymology sections provided (where applicable) by any "non-fandom" website. Such a big departure is, to me, an obvious problem. If someday the definition of "etymology" will be modified, then your use might become correct; right now, the two do not match.

>>> in conlangs and neologism, we'd be looking at the root words that have been portmanteau'd or otherwise been used to make a new term.

I agree on this point, with some caveat. Indeed, I checked about 100 etymology sections on Dragon-Quest.org, and left about 20 as they were, because they are neologisms or puns. On the other hand, translations, definitions, and descriptions are different from etymologies.

>>> So a linguist would definitely not frown upon the use of the word etymology in the way that it is used here,

I disagree. One year ago, I raised this same point on another Wiki. In order to provide evidence, I sent a message to several linguists from Wikipedia Linguistics Portal. All the answers were like: "There is not an ounce of etymology there" (because I was the only one who provided any evidence, that wiki stonewalled me... AND they also sent me a policies link stating that stonewalling is forbidden on their own wiki). ---Abacos (talk) 09:46, 24 August 2023 (EDT)

Since you didn't think it necessary to adress some of my points about prescriptivism, I'll put it this way: you're the only one who has had a problem with the way we use the term I've ever encountered in my decade long wiki career, and it's not even that you don't understand it, you just prefer to use "Name origin" (which... I have news for you about what the word etymology is made up of). The reasons your concerns aren't heeded here nor anywhere else is 1-It doesn't cause any good faith confusion 2- vernacular use is not an invalid thing in a non-academic context and the fact that you thought to bother actual professionnals for a fansite about Dragon Quest is secondhand-embarrasing 3- it's a very small nitpick that demands a lot of corrective work 4- you went about it by complaining about us on an external website and keep insisting and obfuscating, which doesn't really make anyone here open to listening, sorry. It has nothing to do with Civil vs Common law, I'm confused where you even got that from and if you think it's an apt simile, you fundamentally don't undertand how language works, which is where we circle back to prescriptivism.
This has been an interesting conversation. Even though I'm still confused about how we are supposed to explain how terms from different languages are formed without translation, definitiuons and descriptions.--Tigali (talk) 10:25, 24 August 2023 (EDT)

This is very important, therefore I am going to leave the rest aside for a while. You wrote: you went about it by complaining about us on an external website and keep insisting and obfuscating

I am sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about. Dragon-Quest.org redirected me to Woodus.com . Was it the wrong thing to do? Also, I am not obfuscating anything. Quite the opposite: on Woodus.com one guy was getting out of subject and I asked to stay on topic. Are we talking about the same thing? --Abacos (talk) 17:39, 2 September 2023 (EDT)

Dragon Quest.org did not, in fact, redirect you to Woodus, it's an external website we happen to have a partnership with. So yes, it is what I'm talking about. Also, in the topic you helpfully linked, you were talking about straight up commiting automated vandalism because we wouldn't agree, sooooooo... Even if I don't believe you have the technical capabilities to do so, I don't believe I should continue entertaining your points for that reason. It was very enlightening to see that under the pseudo-intellectual prescriptivist prose is a person who would throw such tantrums when they don't get their way.
TL;DR Apart from if Follower of Light has got something to say about it, you lost your shot at convincing anyone here, like the previous wiki that "stonewalled" you. Who knows, maybe third time's the charm? Good day.--Tigali (talk) 10:28, 3 September 2023 (EDT)
I would like to stop here. If interested, please read my message to Tigali and/or my edits on Woodus (same link as above). --Abacos (talk) 17:48, 3 September 2023 (EDT)

Um…[edit]

Hello again. You were always such great help to me and a good friend not to check in and see how you’ve been doing. Have a wonderful holiday! icysugarspike 16:35, 4 December 2023 (EST)

I appreciate the Christmas well-wishes, thank you! Aside from the usual end-of-year mania I can't complain, and I hope things are at least thrice as good in your neck of the woods. Slicing up older material has given me a whole new appreciation for the work you did for the site gathering image resources, I really hope I'm living up to the standards you set. (Follower of Light (talk) 22:28, 4 December 2023 (EST))

I’m so flattered, you make me turn a tinge pinkish. You more than live up to my standards! If you wouldn’t mind pointing me in the right direction, I’d love to see the new images you’ve uploaded. I’m a huge fan of concept art for games, especially DQ. Enjoy! icysugarspike 22:50, 12 December 2023 (EST)

It's all under the archive.org user account I have linked on my main page and right here. There's still more than a few holy grails I want to hunt down, but I think this is a half-way decent foundation to build upon. (Follower of Light (talk) 23:27, 12 December 2023 (EST))

The "Related Monsters" sections[edit]

Just to be clear, while I am not sure if there is a policy on the matter, I usually put "Related Monsters" all the way at the bottom as they aren't about the subject of the article. Antiyonder (talk) 20:28, 28 December 2023 (EST)

Placing the related monsters links at the bottom of the page does make sense, but since the galleries have been growing I've noticed that the tab tends to get lost under all the images. I've started placing it as the second-to-last so that the reader has a chance to notice it before the pictures catch their attention.(Follower of Light (talk) 20:39, 28 December 2023 (EST))
Good point. Yeah, it's why I go heavy with repeated links. Besides the JP equivalent to the wiki doing so, I try to make things user friendly especially to newcomers to the franchise. Hence sometimes if you notice I take some spoiler precautions, since while most of my edits are for old games, they aren't as prominent in the US.
Also, one plan I have for galleries regarding monsters from IV-VI is to include their bestiary pic from the Android game's 'The Big Book of Beasts'. Antiyonder (talk) 20:49, 28 December 2023 (EST)
Spoiler guards are a good idea with how self-referential this series is, especially with The Dark Prince introducing IV's story to a whole new crowd. Yeah, moving the B.B.o.B screenshots to the individual monster galleries is a good call as they'd be isolated otherwise.(Follower of Light (talk) 21:01, 28 December 2023 (EST))
Infact, I think I will moved Pegasus to Peggy Sue, since yeah the article is a major spoiler as is. Also going to redirect character content from an article from VI to Tania since the similar named character from III has a different localization name. I will make those changed and make sure to adjust the links properly this week. Antiyonder (talk) 20:34, 8 January 2024 (EST)

Gloobert[edit]

So the Slime from Psaro and Rose picture book and The Dark Prince. Would just to be sure, the same Slime that was in the Rosehill tower from IV? Antiyonder (talk) 07:24, 4 February 2024 (EST)

By all accounts and research this seems to be the case. (Follower of Light (talk) 10:21, 4 February 2024 (EST))
In fact, I think he appears in the Definitive Edition of XI as well, right? Antiyonder (talk) 20:46, 4 February 2024 (EST)
Really? I can't recall that but it has been a while since I played XI. Let me know if you can remember where he's at. (Follower of Light (talk) 19:22, 5 February 2024 (EST))
Still haven't played it, but I watched my brother play through the Nintendo Switch port and yeah he appears during the Tickington quest where you save him and Rose from Sir Roseguardin. Antiyonder (talk) 22:33, 5 February 2024 (EST)
Ah, derp, I should have figured as much. I'll take a look at my old file soon and get the little glob added in.(Follower of Light (talk) 21:07, 6 February 2024 (EST))
