Tongue Lashing is a breath attack in the Dragon Quest series that first appeared in Dragon Quest V. It tries to give a single enemy goosebumps by licking them - in other words, incapacitate them for a single turn, preventing them from doing anything until the next one.

It can be especially irksome when used by groups of enemies that know this technique, as they can chain them together and prevent one or more characters from doing anything for each turn of the fight, lowering one's overall offensive power and preventing healers from healing when needed.

The Sultry Dance and Leg Sweep are similar to this ability.

Appearances

Dragon Quest V

Making its first appearance in this game, enemies such as the Poxtongue and Toxtongue like to use it.

Tongue Lashing can be learned by several monster companions, such as the Minidemon, while monsters like the Walking corpse start with the ability already learned. It does not cost MP to use.

Minidemon 4
Powie yowie 20

Dragon Quest VI

Tongue Lashing is learned by Spot at level 4. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Gadabout vocation.

The monster Lips also made their first appearance in this game, with this monster being arguably the most associated with this ability due to their characteristically large tongue and their early appearance in the very first dungeon of this game, where their usage of this ability can be a real nuisance, sometimes even a fatal one, due to the lack of party members.

Dragon Quest VII

Tongue Lashing can be learned by advancing to rank 6 as a Jester in the original Playstation version, and at rank 5 in the 3DS version, as well as rank 2 as a Lips.

Dragon Quest VIII

In this game, it became an enemy-exclusive skill for the first time, being used by monsters such as Lips.

Dragon Quest IX

Returning once again as a enemy-exclusive skill. Tongue Lashing is a favored tactic of the Gastropog.

Dragon Quest XI

Returns as an enemy-exclusive skill. The only monster in the entire game that uses it is Lips, as not even its stronger pallete swaps that appear in this game (Kisser and Smacker) use the ability this time around, preferring to use Blow Kiss and Tongue Bashing.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Called LushLicks in this game, this ability can be learned by various monsters. It requires the monster to be at least level 7, with at least 55 HP, and 67 agility. It is learned by the Anteater, FairyDrak, GiantSlug, Hork, Lipsy, Poisongon, Spooky, SpotSlime and Tonguella.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

The requirements to learn LushLicks are unchanged. It is naturally learned by the Gamanian, Slurperon, SnakeBat, and TropicGel. It is no longer naturally learned by the Spooky.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Tongue Lashing can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Tongue Lashing can be learned from all the skill it could be previously, though Fear-monger now requires only 14 points.

Dragon Quest Tact

Tongue Lashing can be learned by Powie yowie at level 16 and costs 11 MP to use. It has a chance to stun a single enemy.
