The Automaton (formerly ProtoMech) is a monster in both Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest Monsters 2.

The ProtoMech can be found in the Excavated Cave and the Demon Lord's Lair. The ProtoMech has a rare chance of dropping a ProtoMech Heart, allowing a party member to become a ProtoMech if that heart is taken to the Temple of Dharma.
