Debora Briscoletti (デボラ, Debora) is a playable character that appears exclusively in the Nintendo DS and smartphone versions of Dragon Quest V.

She is the elder sister of Nera Briscoletti, one of Rodrigo Briscoletti's two daughters, and one of the eponymous "Heavenly Brides" that can marry the Hero.

She has gone on to make guest appearances in other games, including IX and XI, as well as spinoff games.

Appearance and PersonalityEdit

Debora prefers expensive clothes and spends considerable time on her makeup. Her jet black hair, revealing attire and piercing eyes give Debora a somewhat intimidating form. She is taller and more voluptuous compared to her younger sister and has blue eyes. Her black hair is worn in an updo with decorative roses as hair accessories and she has a beauty mark near her left eye. Debora wears a short pink one-piece dress with red frills and lace and a red ribbon tied in the front, red high heels, a white fur stole around her shoulders, as well as various gold accessories. She wears gold hoop earrings, bracelets, a beaded anklet around her right foot, a necklace with a green stone, a beaded chain with pink jewels around her waist, and a sash with green and blue jewels of the same style worn by her sister Nera.

Because she was given whatever she asked for as a child, Debora has a very impatient and bossy personality that rubs most people the wrong way, even her own father. She initially considers the Hero more of a servant than a husband, but gradually softens her demeanor after she joins him on the search for his mother. ("So I can keep my eye on you.") As much as Debora loves to boss around others, she herself despises being told what to do and being bossed around, this is clearly displayed in Party Chat after the Hero marries her, where she will tell him that she married him not only to have her own servant, but to get away from her father and his rules. As a mother, Debora first appears very strict toward her children, though her love for them is clearly displayed in cut-scenes.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly BrideEdit

Debora is first seen in the prologue as Pankraz and his son are disembarking in Littlehaven. She runs off to the ship cabin before her father can introduce her. She is not seen again until the second generation, when The Hero arrives in Mostroferrato in search of the Zenithian shield. Though she initially stand-offish in manner, when it comes time for him to decide between marrying Bianca Whitaker or Nera, Debora descends down the stairs and suddenly offers herself as a third bachelorette - to see if he is man enough to take her hand in marriage. If the player chooses Debora, the two marry and she will continue to travel with you as The Hero's wife.

Upon reaching The Hero's homeland, the kingdom of Gotha, it is revealed that Debora is pregnant and she will stay in the castle to rest until it is time. After he returns from the Riteof Passage, she gives birth to twins: a boy and a girl. The Hero is coronated as the new King of Gotha - but after a night of celebrations, Debora is abducted by monsters while most of the castle inhabitants were passed out. While attempting to rescue her from Kon the Knight at his tower, it is learned that she has the blood of The Legendary Hero - and for this reason she and her husband are turned to stone by Bishop Ladja.

In the eight years that pass, Debora's petrified form ended up at the temple of Crocodilopolis. The Hero and the children are able to finally free her, and she rejoins the party. Together they travel to Nadiria to find The Hero's mother, Madalena, and defeat the Grandmaster of the Underworld.

StatsEdit

Debora is more of a physical fighter than Bianca or Nera. She has the most limited spell selection of the three, but can equip several of the more powerful swords, as well as Hela's hammer and every claw in the game. There are a few pieces of equipment unique to her, such as the Diamond akillics and Floral parasol. Due to her high agility attribute and the aforementioned acrylics, Debora is adept at slaying metal monsters.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of RevelationEdit

Debora appears in one of the three possible versions of Reaper's Peak, specifically the one based on the far distant future of {}Dragon Quest V}}. She is found in the top floor of the mayor's home, and unlike the other brides she is not spending time with her children.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry SkiesEdit

On October 15, 2010, Debora began appearing as a special guest at the Quester's Rest in Stornway. This could be downloaded through the DQVC using Nintendo's Wi-Fi channel when it was still available. When spoken to, she will give the Hero different pieces of her outfit is certain conditions are fulfilled.

The player will receive the Accolade Bossy Bride if the Hero wears all parts of Debora's costume. However, it is only possible for a female Hero to earn this accolade as certain parts of Debora's costume are female-exclusive.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeEdit

The Luminary can visit the Briscoletti mansion on the eve of the wedding via the Echo Chamber in the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Due to the actions of a monster sealed away by her ancestor Rodolfo, Debora has been turned into an exact duplicate of her father on the eve of her wedding day. Thankfully, the groom is still away from the mansion and the monster has been located in Alltrades Abbey.

Debora is more concerned about fitting into her wardrobe when transformed than anything else, complaining that none of her clothes fit anymore. When spoken to after the event is over, she fumes over the absence of the groom and calls him a useless boy as she wonders where he is.

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road VictoryEdit

Appearing under the name "Third Woman Debora", she can be summoned to perform a special attack named "Sky Heel Drop". She leaps into the air and delivers a powerful axe kick that splits Mount Azimuth in half.

Dragon Quest RivalsEdit

Debora appears in the illustrations of several cards and can be used as the player avatar.

Dragon Quest of the StarsEdit

Debora appears as a side character in the second part of the Dragon Quest V story event. If players choose to adventure with her, she will accompany the group in the Dragon Quest V quests, occasionally finding additional treasures, and also appear in the multiplayer lobby when hosting. Choosing her also gives players the option to obtain equipment based on her, as well as black wigs based on Parry and Madchen; and the option to dress Debora up with any armor the player has -as long as it's equippable by female characters.

In the last Dragon Quest V event rerun before the Global version closed down, players could obtain Debora's earrings and her floral hair accessory.

Dragon Quest TactEdit

Debora appears as an S-rank character of the Hero family as part of the limited Dragon Quest V event, appearing on her own banner along with Snowbird. She can also be chosen as the player's companion by giving her the Circle of Water. She wields Iron claws in her model and her Akillics appear as a special weapon. Debora also appears as a boss in the special Zenithian Brides boss battle with Bianca and Nera.

QuotesEdit

Knightmare Towers

"'I knew you'd come and rescue me sooner or later, <player>.But you shouldn't have! You've played right into their hands! That's why they used the Chancellor and kidnapped me. It was to lure you here. The ringleader is planning to kill you and then become king in your place! How dare he!"
"'<player>! You'll pay for this, Kon!"
"'Now, <player>! Finish him off!"

EtymologyEdit

Debora is the Italian, Dutch, and German form of the name Deborah, itself a Hebrew name דְּבוֹרָה that means "bee". In the Old Testament Book of Judges from the Bible, Deborah is a heroine and a prophetess who leads the Israelites when they are threatened by the Canaanites. Together with the help of Israelite general Barak, they form an army and destroy the Canaanite army. It is a common Jewish name and was first used by English Christians after the Protestant Reformation.

TriviaEdit

  • Her wedding ceremony is the same as her sister's would be (except it uses fireworks for her entrance instead of colorful confetti like Nera's), though the Hero is forced to sleep on the floor during their honeymoon. Because the story is not significantly different for any of the brides, the only truly new experience marrying Debora brings is her unique Party Chat and more aggressive battle style.
  • If the player did not marry Debora, and later visits her with his children in Generation III, they will mention how "scary" she is in Party Chat. She remains curt as ever.
  • In her room, there is a "Bruise the Ooze" game machine that the player can use.
