The Flame Shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series which first appeared in Dragon Quest V. In its first three appearances in the series, it offered protection against ice attacks, but in Dragon Quest VIII and IX, it was changed to offer protection gainst ice attacks, whereas in XI, it offers no elemental protection to speak of.

Dragon Quest V
The flame shield has a defence bonus of +40, and reduces damage from ice spells and skills by 15. It may be equipped by the Hero (Dragon Quest V), Parry, and Tuppence. It is sold for 17000 in Faerie Lea and Precaria.
Dragon Quest VI
The flame shield retains it's defence bonus of +40, and now reduces ice damage by 20. It may be equipped by the Hero (Dragon Quest VI), Carver, Terry, Amos, and Lizzie. It is sold in Felonia for 17000.
Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest VIII
The flame shield offers a defense bonus of +34, reduces fire damage by 10, and casts a form of Insulatle that only cuts flame damage when used as an item in battle. Why the sudden change in parameters is unknown, possibly to highlight the existence of the Ice shield. It can be equipped by Yangus or Jessica, and is sold in both Empycchus for 7100.
