The Flame shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series which first appeared in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. In its first three appearances in the series, it offered protection against ice attacks, but after VIII it was changed to offer protection against fire attacks.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The Flame shield has a Defence bonus of +40, and reduces damage from ice spells and skills by 15. It may be equipped by the Hero, Parry, and Tuppence. It can be purchased for 17,000 gold coins in Faerie Lea and Precaria. It can be sold for 8,500 gold coins.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
The Flame shield retains it's Defence bonus of +40, and now reduces ice damage by 20. It may be equipped by the Hero, Carver, Terry, Amos, and Lizzie. It is sold in Felonia for 17,000 gold coins.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The Flame shield increases Defence by +36, Style by 17, and cuts ice damage by 25. It is sold for 17,000 gold coins in the Dwarf's Den, and can be equipped by the Hero and Aishe.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
The Flame shield offers a Defense bonus of +34, reduces fire damage by 10, and casts a form of Insulatle that only cuts flames when used as an item in battle. Why the sudden change in parameters is unknown, possibly to highlight the existence of the Ice shield. It can be equipped by Yangus and Jessica Albert in all versions as well as by Morrie in the 3DS port, and is sold in both Empycchus for 7,100 gold coins.
