Equinox is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. It first appeared as a grotto boss in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies but was later regulated as an enemy.

Characteristics

The Equinox is based on the mythological Ki-rin (麒麟), a fabled horse with the head and scales of a dragon. These creatures have a much more sinister color tone than their pallet swaps, having pure white eyes, black body scales with teal scales covering the flank and shoulders, and hooves that are surrounded by a ghostly blue aura.

Etymology

The name originates from an astronomic term "Equinox", referring to the moment when the sun reaches one of two intersections between the ecliptic and the celestial equator as well as "Equine" which means horse.
