Dragon Quest the DIVE is an upcoming virtual reality immersion event that celebrates the series' 40th anniversary. The name is derived from this immersive experience, allowing attendants to dive into the world of Dragon Quest through the use of state of the art VR headsets and moving chairs.
Details[edit]
The DIVE will be held at the harakado store in Shibuya, Tokyo from June 17th through September 6th. The VR ride utilizes the meta quest 3 headset to provide a 360° viewing experience and guests will be guided by a heroic healslime named Homita; a non-VR version of the ride will be available for children under the age of 10 and those who cannot use VR headsets. Additionally there will be tactile immersion events that include full-scale replicas of Erdrick's Sword, the Zenithian Sword, and the Supreme Sword of Light as well as the bodies of slimes, the fur of a teeny sanguini, and even the mouth of a lips.
Trivia[edit]
- Series creator Yuji Horii first speculated about applying virtual reality to Dragon Quest in a roundtable interview with Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, conducted in the first issue of V Jump magazine in July of 1993. Spurred on by Sakaguchi remarking that he would love to see hardware advance to the point of displaying enemies via holographic projection so that players could fight in three dimensions, Horii explained that an ideal VR experience would be one where the player is pulled into a world that is totally indistinguishable from reality and cited the events of the 1990 film Total Recall as an example. He praised the masterful legerdemain of a Shinjuku virtual theater for being able to create an immersive experience with nothing but clever visuals and moving chairs, which would be echoed 34 years later through the DIVE's use of rotating chairs and headsets[1].
