Article Names for Spells[edit]

Here are a few possible alternatives for the article name of a spell:

  • Original Japanese, as a combination of the Kana and Romaji (e.g. ルーラ Ruura).
  • Enix Dragon Warrior localizations (e.g. Return).
  • Square Enix Dragon Quest localizations, those appearing from Dragon Quest VIII on (e.g. Zoom).

While arguments could be made for each, I am of the opinion that the original Japanese should be used as the article name, for two reasons:

  • Consistency - the names in Japanese have not changed, unlike what we have experienced in North America. Some spells have had multiple localization changes, such as Baikiruto (バイキルト), which has appeared in English as Bikill, TwinHits, and most recently, Oomph. And who is to say that the current localizations will remain unchanged into the future?
  • Compromise - While I am partial to the Dragon Warrior localizations, continuing to use them is becoming outdated; conversely, the use of Square Enix's new localizations, to me, denys the prior history of Dragon Quest in North America. I also believe that it could imply, to some, that the previous localizations were incorrect.

These are just my opinions; you are entitled to your own. I am allowing sufficient time to discuss this; after May 15, 2010 this discussion will result in the establishment of a policy. Zenithian 12:46, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

The results of the poll at Dragon's Den were:

  • * Original Japanese (6/9 votes, or 66.67%)
  • Enix Dragon Warrior localizations (1/9 votes, or 11.11%)
  • Square Enix Dragon Quest localizations (2/9 votes, or 22.22%)

Therefore, the original Japanese shall be used as the article name for any given spell on this wiki. Zenithian 14:15, 24 May 2010 (EDT)

This article is not a list and contains info which should be in the Dragon Quest Wiki:Manual of Style. Its content should be moved into that article once details of localization policy have been figured out. --FlyingRagnar 14:23, 19 October 2010 (CDT)
