This article is about the attack skill, for the enemy see Burning Breath (Monster)

Burning Breath is a breath skill in the Dragon Quest series. When used, it attempts to Paralyse a group of enemies.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

In the original NES version, Armful is the only monster that can use Burning Breath. It can also be used by Grievous bodily arms and Pandora's boxes in remake versions of the game.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Burning Breath is an enemy-only skill that can be used by Bulldozers, Cocoon goons, Hellspawns, Incineraytors, and Joojoo gooroos.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Burning Breath is learned by several monster companions such as the Flamethrower and Man o' war. It does not cost MP to use, and the affliction lasts for 1~3 turns. The skill uses the same element as Whack and is ineffective against monsters immune to instant death.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Paralysis has been given an element independent from instant death beginning with VI and the skill is obtained by advancing to rank 7 of the Monster Master vocation. Paralysis lasts 4~7 turns and, when used by an ally, the skill has a 50%, 20%, 10%, and 0% chance to connect depending on the enemy's resistance.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Burning Breath is learned by reaching rank 4 of the Monster Masher vocation in the PSX and 3DS version, as well as rank 4 of the Bone baron and rank 2 of the Gripevine monster vocations. In has the same aspects as VI's in the original release, but now lasts 6~9 turns in the remake.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Burning Breath returns to being an enemy-only skill that can be used by Bulldozers, Dark stars, Hell gladiators, the Killer croaker's backs, Soulspawns, and the Emerald dragon.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Ziggy is the only recruitable monster in the game that can use Burning Breath.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Burning Breath is used by various monsters, but is unable to be performed by any player-controlled characters. It can be used by Bagmas, Freaky tikis, Gadrongos, Men o' war, Rashaveraks, Sail serpents Scarlet fevers, Corvus's second form, and Orgodemir starting at Level 24.

Dragon Quest X

Burning Breath is an enemy-only skill that can be used by various monsters, such as Corpse corporals and Hell gladiators. Weaker enemies have a 30% chance of inflicting Paralysis on characters, while the breath emitted by stronger monsters has a 70% chance of inflicting paralysis.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Burning Breath appears once again as an enemy-only skill that can be used by various monsters such as the Armful and the Auroral serpent. There is also a cutscene in the game where the Auroral serpent paralyzes the party with its burning breath even after being defeated.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Called PalsyAir in this game, this ability can be learned by various monsters. It requires the monster to reach at least level 16 with at least 112 HP, and 96 intelligence. It is learned by the Biguana, DarkEye, FireWeed and Saccer, among others.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

PalsyAir now requires 173 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the MultiEyes.

Burning Breath is known naturally by Armful, Bulldozer, Flamethrower, Grillerpillar, Man o' War, and Silver platypunk at Level 1, costing 11 MP to use. It has a range of three squares in front of the user and will occasionally inflict paralysis on all enemies in the area of effect.

Dragon Quest Treasures

Burning Breath costs 3 MP and fills a large portion of the screen with bad air. It is learned by Dark draglings, Dark sabrecats, and Hardy hands.

Etymology

While the skill's name may imply that it is another type of fire breath, in actuality people who are afflicted with neuro-toxins describe a painful burning sensation in addition to other sensory anomalies.
