A Cut Above

From Dragon Quest Wiki

A Cut Above is a recurring skill in the series. The user focuses their fighting spirit, then delivers a furious multi-strike attack with their weapon.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest X[edit]

A Cut Above can be learned by Gladiators by investing 100 skill points into their Guts skill. It costs 8 MP to use and deals six attacks to a single enemy at 80~100% damage per hit.

  • In the Offline version of the game, the Hero will learn A Cut Above as a Gladiator at level 50. When dual wielding weapons, the skill will attack 7 times. Hussar can learn the skill through the Cool panel in his character builder for 20 skill points when it expands in Version 2.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

A Cut Above is a secret skill that can be learned by Hendrik through the Heroism panel in his character builder for 25 skill points, requiring at least four of the surrounding panels to be unlocked first. It costs 8 MP to use and can be used with any weapon equipped. It attacks a single enemy six times. The first five hits deal 40% damage, while the sixth deals 50% for a total of 250% damage. The hits are unavoidable and never miss.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

A Cut Above is already known by Psaro when he joins the party and costs 12 MP to use. He performs a rapid series of slashes six times with his greatsword, with the last two sending out shockwaves of dark magical energy with a long reach. It is a powerful technique when used in conjunction with Psaro's Liberation skill.

Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End[edit]

A Cut Above can be learned by Lazarel and Teresa as Gladiators by spending 8 skill points after reaching rank 15 in Twin Sword Proficiency or higher, while Psaro once again knows the skill by default. It now costs 18 MP to use.

The Gladiator's version of the skill slashes four times with a pair of giant swords infused with magical energy. It is a powerful technique, but is performed slower than Psaro's version.

Trivia[edit]

  • The skill's Japanese name, Tenka Musō (天下無双), is originally a Chinese idiom which literally means "without another one in the entire world".
  • In English, a cut above is an idiom which refers to someone or something that is superior to the norm.
