Averill

From Dragon Quest Wiki

Averill is an inhabitant of Greedmore Valley, and an optional "enemy". He is found in the lake hidden in the forest to the northwest of Greedmore Valley, being one of many villagers seeking the sage Isaac's treasure said to be at the bottom of the lake. Depending on your choices here, you will either fight him once he is the last man standing after a violent struggle between the villagers for the treasure, or things will be resolved peacefully with him and the other villagers all surviving, though in the end, you have to do the peaceful choice to proceed with the game.

Background[edit]

When you first visit Greedmore Valley and talk to Morgan Gainmore, you will be told to go looking for treasure on your own instead of asking him for help. If you look around town you will find a cave, the Old Coal Mine, which has a treasure chest at the end, this treasure chest contains a note from Morgan saying to come talk to him. Once you tell Morgan of this, he will tell you he will offer you advice on where treasure can be found, but at the cost of 5000 gold. Pay the ransom and he will then say that the sage's treasure can be found at the bottom of the lake hidden in the forest to the northwest of town. Note that you don't actually have to do any of the above to enter this lake, though you do have to have entered Greedmore Valley itself at least once before the game will let you enter the lake.

Once you find the forest lake Northwest of Greedmore, you will then find you were not the first adventurer to be swindled by the rapacious Morgan. Talk to the villagers, and you will learn that the villagers can't get to the treasure at the bottom of the water (though some have tried and died in the process), and also that the sage's treasure is actually the sage Isaac's treasure. When you talk to one of the villagers, he says he would sell his soul if only the lake's water would go away, and then asks if you would do the same. Answer "yes" and the lake water will suddenly start to recede, making the treasure accessible.

At this moment, you have two choices - the bad choice happens when you talk to the villagers instead of rushing to the treasure. You will witness the villagers murder each other in their attempts to be the first to get the treasure. You will also see demons laughing at them and saying you should join in as well. After all the villagers have been killed, you will find Averill to be the last one standing, at which point he will attack you. Beat him and you will get a scene that implies this is all to Mortamor's liking, and time will "loop" back to when you first entered the lake with the villagers still alive so that you can take a more virtuous path.

The correct choice is to go directly to the treasure chest and open it instead of talking to the villagers. Once you open the treasure chest, it will be empty, waking the villagers from their greed-driven bloodlust (with it being implied that this was the real "sage's treasure" that Isaac had let the town inherit all along).
