Double Up is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.
It has changed significantly throughout its appearances, but it always affects the potency of the user's attack.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]
Double Up was retroactively added to the 2024 remake, where it's learned by Martial Artists at level 28 if their wisdom exceeds 73 points. The technique costs 9 MP and deals 200% Strike-element damage to one foe, but the practitioner will take double damage from all attacks for that turn. Double Up is not affected by Oomph, Egg On, Attack Attacker, Sap, & Kasap.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
Double Up strikes at 200% power, but the user suffers increased damage taken during the round. It is learned by Carver at level 14 and by Spot at level 16. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Paladin vocation. In the Nintendo DS remake the skill has the second highest priority of any action in the game, trailing only behind Kaclang. It can also be used by the enemies Averill, Brick, and Berzorker.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
Double Up is learned by reaching rank 3 as a Paladin.
- The skill has been given a priority boost in the Nintendo 3DS remake, only activating after Kaclang and Lifeboat.
It is used by the enemies crabble-rouser, machismogre, and wolfram wartoise.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
This ability is learned with 22 skill points allocated into Guts skill. It increases Attack by two stages, while lower Defence by one stage instead of increasing all types of damage taken. The bolstered attack state lasts 6~9 turns, and the crippled Defence 7~10.
