From Dragon Quest Wiki

Selflessness is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.

It protects allies by having the user take the hit in their place, covering one friend in the mainline games and the entire party in the Monsters spin-offs.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Selflessness shields any ally for the duration of one round. It is granted at the first rank of the Paladin vocation.

It is used by the enemies Liddle, Brock, Cabot, iron tortoises, and plated goretoises.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Selflessness works in the exact same way as in the previous game, being learned by Paladins at the first rank.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, it is now an advanced skill and can also be learned by Champions at the first rank.

It is used by the enemy ironclad wartoises.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

This ability is learned with 55 skill points allocated into Virtue skill. The user guards any ally in critical condition for one round.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Known as Cover in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 5 with 35 HP, 30 Defense and 30 Agility. It grows into Guardian when the monster reaches level 12 with 84 HP, 72 defense and 72 agility. It is naturally learned by the Grendal, IronTurt, LavaMan and StoneMan.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

The requirements to learn Cover are unchanged. It is naturally learned by the BossTroll.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Selflessness can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Selflessness costs 5 MP and allows the user to protect all allies from all types of damage for one turn, but the damage per enemy attack is increased by 25%. Selflessness is learned via the Altruist, Barricade, Defender, Empath, Good Knight, Hulk, Just Ruler, Martyr, Musclehead, and Protector talents.

Dragon Quest Walk[edit]

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Selflessness is known naturally by Diamond slime at level 1 and can be learned by Armoured scorpion and Masqueraider at level 22, Leery lantern at level 26, Wyrtle at level 36, Stone golem at level 38, and Thwarthog at level 42. Crocodine can also learn it through Talent Blossoming. It costs 23 MP to use and will take all attacks for any allies in the squares adjacent to the user until their next turn. Although it is not stated, Selflessness will also give the user a 40% reduction in damage taken for one turn, as well.
