Lightning

From Dragon Quest Wiki
This article is about the elemental skill. For the spell called "Lightning" in earlier localizations, see Kazap.

Lightning is an ability in the Dragon Quest series. Unless otherwise stated, it pulls down bolts from the sky for 50~70 damage for no MP cost, and is typically learned by bruiser types rather than casters.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Lightning is an enemy-only skill that is used by the demon thunderers in the remakes of IV, dealing 35~45 blast damage to the entire party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Lightning is learned by several monster companions such as the old man of the sea and bomboulder. In the Super Famicom version, the skill dealt Zap damage, but in all other versions is uses the Bang element.

Name Level
Bomboulder 20
Rebjørn 40
Saber 40
Golem 45
Old man of the sea 45

Wyrtoises and Bjørn the Behemoose use it as enemies.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Lightning is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Luminary vocation. Despite all appearances, the skill belongs to the Bang family of spells much like the Lightning Slash. In the Super Famicom version, Lightning can also be learned by the Lesser demon at level 15.

It is used by the enemies hellstalkers, crayzees, the Third Test, the gallows giants, and Murdaw in the third fight against him.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

In the original Sony PlayStation version, Lightning is a hybrid skill that can be learned by advancing to rank 5 as a Mage or Sailor immediately after completing the other. It can also be learned by mastering the Serial quiller vocation.

  • Lightning was nerfed in the 3DS version, with a new range of 30~50. In the 3DS version, hybrid skills no longer exist and Lightning is learned normally by mastering the Sailor vocation.

It can be used by the enemies electroslimes, natural born quillers, monarchaeopteryxes, beastly priests, demon thunderers, hellstalkers, and Orgodemir's first form on Disc 1.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

An enemy-only skill, Lightning deals 28~36 damage. It can be used by phantom swordsmen, demon thunderers, hellstalkers, and Juggerwroth.

The player can use it by recruiting the Infamous Monsters Damon, Othello, or Sir Bodless.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Lightning grew weaker in IX, dealing only 17~26 damage. It can be used by cumulus rexes, wyrtoises, and the Master of Nu'un. Stronger variants debuted, however, as linked below.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Lightning can be learned by Druids by allocating 80 skill points into their Summon skill and costs 18 MP to use. In this game, it actually inflicts lightning damage, dealing around 135~165 damage to enemies around the user and having a chance to inflict paralysis. Once the user's magical might surpasses 350, it increases in potency, reaching to a maximum of 835~865 at 1,350 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Known as Frightening Lightning in this game, it is once again an enemy-only skill that can be used by 24-carrot bunicorns, Electric needlers, Old men of the sea, and Vicious old men of the sea.
