Plus Value

Plus Value (+値 + Atai) is a parameter in the Dragon Quest Monsters series that represents a monster's lineage through breeding or through synthesis, being passed on from the parents to the child monster and increasing by a certain amount based on the parents' own value. The plus value increases the base attributes of a synthesized monster by the listed amount, such as a +12 monster at level 1 having twelve more points in every attribute compared to a wild monster of the same level.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters & Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

The "plus" value (stylized as + in-game) is a general indicator of a monster's capability compared to it's parents as well as its level cap. The value is determined by the sum of the parents' level at the time of conception, with the following intervals:

  • Level 20~39: +1
  • Level 40~59: +2
  • Level 60~75: +3
  • Level 76~99: +4
  • Level 100: +5

In the event of two "plus" monsters being bred, only the pedigree's value is added. For example, a dracky+10 bred with a lips+8 and both monster's level sum is 100, then the egg will have a "plus" value of 15 instead of 23. The maximum "plus" value is 99. Because recruited monsters will hit their level caps long before 100, with a star mark serving as the indicator, it is important to consider raising this ceiling with each generation. The calculation for this is ("plus" value x 2) + the breed's natural limit. For example, a ewwnicorn+6 will have a new limit of 62, as that species stops leveling at 50.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker & Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Plus value influence on attributes operates as it did in the first two games, with the non-pedigree monster's value going to waste. The influence on level limitations has an extra stipulation in that the parent generation need have a level sum of 21 or higher for the child monster to be able to exceed a plus value of +5. Reaching a value of +5 raises the level limit from 50 to 75; to reach level 100 the synthesized monster's plus value must be +10, and this requires the component monsters' combined levels to exceed level 40.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional[edit]

The vanilla version of Joker 2 used the same system as the original, but the Professional update tweaked things so that the level sum requirements for raising a synthesized monsters' level cap were abolished and the level sum of the component monsters has no influence on how much plus value the synthesized monster can accumulate. The plus value to raise the level cap to 75 was lowered to +4, but the value for level 100 remains +10.

The plus value inheritance system has been expedited for the sake of player convenience. If the sum of both component monster's levels are between 21 and 40 then half of the plus value of the weaker monster will be added to the synthesized monster's total on top of the guaranteed +1. For example if the positively charged monster is at level 32 and the negatively charged monster is at level 7 and both have a plus value of +20, then the synthesized monster will have a plus value of 31. If both monsters have a total level of 41 or higher, then the entire plus value of the weaker monster is added to the synthesized monster's total along with the default +1.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit]

The plus value level restriction system was totally abolished in lieu of simply using a synthesized monster's plus value as the threshold marker to rank up. Monsters that rank D or lower with a plus value of +25 will rise to rank C upon being synthesized, and a rank C or B monster with a plus value of +50 will rise to rank A when synthesized. Additionally the plus value system has been simplified so that both component monster's plus values are added together from the beginning. Furthermore if both component monsters have a level total that is 31 or higher, a +5 will be added to the synthesized monster's value in addition to the standard +1. If both components have a total level of 76 or higher, the +5 is buff up to +10.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

The 3DS remake of the second game did not alter the synthesis process.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World[edit]

The plus value returns after an absence in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. It increases a monster's base attributes and whether a synthesized monster will have a higher rank than it's parents.
