"In case you were wondering, you're in the Shrine of Awakening. Only those who have been chosen by a higher power are permitted to enter!
And, well, since you appear to be here, I think we can safely assume you qualify! Congratulations!"
—The Caretaker, in the Shrine of Mysteries (3DS)
The Caretaker is a character in the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past as well as Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. He resides in the Shrine of Mysteries, and is the player's guide to the tablets that allow the party to visit the world's islands in the past and unseal them.
The strange faerie went unnamed until Reimagined.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The Caretaker did not appear in the original PS1 release of Dragon Quest VII. He was added in the 3DS remake along with a rework of the game's opening hours, and in this version must be spoken to in order to insert fragments into the pedestals or to use them to travel once their tablets are fully reassembled.
Upon the Hero and Kiefer's entry into the Shrine of Mysteries, the faerie tasks them with passing through an ancient door east of Estard and gathering items belonging to the four saints whose statues stand in the Shrine. Once the party has retrieved these replicas of the Saint's Equipment, they must return each item to the correct statue in order to finally open the door to the Assembly Room, where the pedestals that allow the party to travel to the past reside.
When the player asks the Caretaker for guidance, he will provide a hint as to the location of a wayward tablet fragment.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined[edit]
The Caretaker retains a similar role to the 3DS version, though he does not require the party to collect replicas of the Saint's Equipment, nor is it necessary to speak with him to interact with the pedestals.
Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]
A statue of the Caretaker appears as Treasure No. 390 in the Adventurer Statues category, with a base value of 120,000.
