Category talk:Classes

From Dragon Quest Wiki

A few days ago, I performed a few moves of pages in this category: a few like Hero (Class) to Hero (vocation), so as to reflect the modern terminology; and Luminary (Vocation) to the lowercase Luminary (vocation), as capitalizing "vocation" didn't match in-game use (nor the implied MOS). However… now that I've poked into this category, I see this is actually widespread. "Class" is used for all the categories and sub-categories, as well as pages like List of classes in Dragon Quest VII; while "vocation" is capitalized in every other parenthetical disambiguation (eg: Mimic (Vocation), of which there are a good dozen or so. I still think my changes were in the right, conforming to policy and style, but since it affects a lot of pages (and would be a bit of an undertaking), I thought it best to solicit community input and feedback about these moves rather than forging ahead unilaterally.

So, in short: does everybody think that a) pages and categories that use "class" should be renamed to "vocation", per modern translations and b) "vocation" should be made lower-case in page titles? Sham hatwitch (talk) 02:30, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

I agree. WolfBloodSpam (talk) 20:12, 26 June 2020 (EDT)

What to do with the "Class system" pages[edit]

I'm going to raise this discussion here, because though it doesn't directly concern the category, it concerns multiple pages within the category, and this seems like the best-suited place for discussion on classes…

OK, so, when I was going through this category recently, I learned of the following pages: Class system (Dragon Quest III), Class system (Dragon Quest VI), and Class system (Dragon Quest IX). There's nothing wrong with those subjects by themselves, but the information is additionally covered elsewhere: Vocation system has explanations of the mechanics, while List of vocations in Dragon Quest III (etc) has the, well, list of vocations. In short, the "class system" pages are redundant.

So I see two possible solutions here. One is to delete the "class system" pages, and redirect them to the main vocation pages— migrating over any unique information (the DQ9 page has some). The second is to go the other way and make the "class system" the primary pages instead, migrating information from "Vocation system" to the individual pages, and possibly merging the standalone lists into it.

My thought is that the first is better, given the "class system" pages are all orphans (or practically so), suggesting the current set-up (of master "Vocation system" page + standalone lists) is working fine, and so this is the least disruptive option. But I could see arguments in favour of bulking up the individual pages, too. What do others think? Sham hatwitch (talk) 19:21, 1 August 2020 (EDT)

As vocation is the standardized term under Square Enix instead of class and that "Class system (Dragon Quest III)" does not match any of the other list pages on the site, I agree that option one is the best route to go with. There are a few pages using the obsolete term that have better presentation, such as IX's, but that can easily be migrated over. Once that's done, a quick check to make sure the redirects are in order should wrap up the situation. If no one objects within 24 hours and makes a good counter-argument, I'll start the migration process and do my best to make the presentation look good.
