The Slime is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.
Introduced in the original Dragon Quest, Slimes have since become the series' mascot due to their popularity and iconic qualities to the point that they even have their own monster family. The basic Slime has been in every Dragon Quest game to date, becoming the effective ambassador of the franchise.
Characteristics[edit]
The Slime is known for its onion or rain droplet shape, round eyes, and goofy, toothless smile; the latter two traits having become the ones shared amongst nearly all their slippery siblings.
Slimes are typically the weakest enemies in every game, having no special abilities and being easily disposed of, and likely the first monster the player ever encounters in a battle. However, starting with IV, there will often be stronger slimes that can call on others of their kind; they may form a King slime when eight gather and starting in IX three Slimes may join to form the Slime stack.
In some games, Slimes have been domesticated into pets and others have gained the ability to speak the human language. In recent translations, all slimes have a certain verbal tic of replacing certain words and syllables with similar, 'slimier' ones, such as saying goo instead of good, gooman instead of human, and Slime instead of time, to give just a few (or goo) examples.

The Slime reprises its role as the first monster owned by the player, this one being Slash, a Slime that traveled with Cobi and Tara's family to GreatLog.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart[edit]
As was the case with the previous two titles, the Slime is once again the starting monster. Is is a 1-star member of the Slime family with a weight of 1. Its in-game description reads "It's the most famous monster who happens to have many allies."
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]
In a break from tradition, the Slime is not the first monster given to the player, who is instead offered a choice of either a Platypunk, Mischievous mole, or Dracky. The Slime does appear on the first island inhabited by wild monsters that the player visits, Infant Isle, along with several uncharted islands, and is likely the first wild monster encountered in the game.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]
Much like previous games in the Joker series, the Slime is one of the first (if not the first) monsters the player fights, although their first monster given is always a Jailcat. Slimes are Rank F monsters that give very small amounts of Experience and Gold. They have a small chance to drop a Slimedrop as a treasure item. Its BREAK form is found later in the game, in the Core. It can be purchased from the Wi-Fi plaza for one bronze coin.

Mario Sports Mix[edit]
Appearing as a playable character, the Slime has three different costumes that feature its normal coloration, the She-slime, and the Metal slime.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
The Slime appears as a spirit, a cameo figure in one of the Hero's victory screens, bounces around the Hero in one of his taunts, and is a DLC hat for the Mii Fighters.
Notable Slimes[edit]
- Goober - originally known as Rookie in the Super Famicom version, he is a Slime companion joining you after winning the Slimopolis in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation.

In animation[edit]
- The regular Slimes appear in the Captain N: The Game Master episode "Trojan Dragon". In addition to their altered designs, their means of attack is spitting out acidic slime. They're defeated by the weapon shots of Captain N, Kid Icarus/Pit & Mega Man and drop some 2 gold coins each.
Trivia[edit]
- The original Famicom artwork for a slime drawn by Akira Toriyama had the slippery creature not blue, but a lavender color.
- Unlike his contemporaries, longtime Nintendo Power staff writer (and current Nintendo of America localization manager) Alan Averill never had a photo of him printed in the magazine; instead, he was represented by a plush Slime doll.
- The internet MMORPG Kingdom of Loathing has a monster called Irritating Series of Random Encounters which is a group of 8 Slimes. It is a reference to the random encounters of most RPG games.
- In an interview, series creator Yuji Horii revealed that his inspiration for this enemy was some "slime-looking enemy" (possibly the creeping crud from the Wizardry series).[1]
- Issue 277 of Nintendo Power featured a Slime in the Star Power section, where the "gooey blue mascot" had its career as one of many "hapless punching bags" charted, as well as its physiology analyzed. The section also showcased a handful of other types of Slimes, such as the Metal slime and Slime knight.
- Despite often being the emblem used to represent the series, they are not used as the series symbol in Smash Ultimate.
- There is a minigame called Slippin' Slime that appears in the remakes for VI, which functions similarly to curling.
