Idealist (ねっけつかん nekketsukan / ねっけつ nekketsu, translated as macho in the Game Boy Color version of Dragon Quest III and hotblood in the Monsters series) is a personality in the Dragon Quest III remakes, in Dragon Quest Monsters and Dragon Quest Monsters 2, in Dragon Quest X, and in Dragon Quest: Monster Parade.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
"You are something of an idealist…
You are gifted with a strong sense of justice, and an even stronger sense of purpose… You are also kind to others…
I would like to be able to tell you that these qualities endear you to those around you…
But sadly, this is not the case… And why might this be…? You may not believe the answer…
It is because, deep down, they are not as strong as you… Their hearts are weak…
And so, being with you… Being in the presence of such strength… It frustrates and upsets them…
Perhaps if you learn to show your more vulnerable side, people will come to enjoy your company more…
But then, your strength of character is no bad thing… Perhaps it is others, not you, who must change…"

In the Dragon Quest III remakes, idealist is a personality that improves strength and resilience growth, but reduces wisdom and luck growth.
At the start of the game, the hero becomes an idealist by receiving the final test of character in the desert. The hero must tell Dickie to carry his brother back to town.
Other party members have a chance to be an idealist when talent scouted at Patty's Party Planning Place, depending on their stat bonuses.
An existing character cannot become an idealist through items.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]
The idealist personality increases strength by 15%, increases resilience by 20%, has no influence on agility, increases stamina by 10%, decreases wisdom by 10%, and decreases luck by 40%. There are no post-recruitment items that can turn a character into an idealist.
