The Alphyn is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, introduced in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. It is a monstrous amalgamation of several different creatures.
Characteristics
Alphyns are bizarre chimeric beasts cobbled together from the parts of various creatures. They have body shape, mane, and tuft at the end of its long tail like that of a lion with a large pair of dragon wings on their backs. Its abdomen and tail are draconic, as well, and it has a scaly carapace with four spikes covering its lower back until the start of its tail. It has a devilish humanoid face, a large pair of pointy ears, and a long tongue. In its original color scheme, the alphyn's mane, tail, wing membrane, and the various tufts on its body were teal, while its abdomen, tail, and tongue were dull gold. Its face, claws, and underside were dark pink, and it had dark purple forearms with lighter purple spikes on its wings and back. It also appears to have gold bracers on its forearms and on its tail.
The alphyn's modern color scheme consists of fuchsia on its fur and wing membrane, shades of teal for its draconic features, light orange for its face, claws, and underside, brown forearms, and white spikes on its wings and back. In battle, it has a particular affinity for explosive magic and will cast Bounce on itself to reflect spells back at enemies.

Alphyn in IX.
Etymology
- The alphyn's English name is derived from the mythological creature of the same name, which was used in medieval heraldry. It has the body of a stocky tiger with a long knotted tail, pointed ears, tufts of hair covering its body, and it occasionally had the forefeet of an eagle or dragon. Occasionally, all four feet are shown like the claws of a lion.
- Despite both being named after the mythological chimaera in Japanese, the alphyn shares almost nothing in common with the recurring chimaera monsters.
Trivia
- From Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional onwards, Alphyn has Nodoph's color scheme.
- The alphyn and its variants have many features in common with the manticore, a mythological creature from Persia with the body of a lion, a pair of dragon-like wings, the tail of a scorpion, and a somewhat humanoid face.
