Sap
Sap is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest Series. Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it has a 100% chance to lower an enemy's defense if the target has no resistance.

Early on, this spell is useful on durable enemies, including bosses. However, as the game progresses, monsters some gain resistance to this spell and total immunity becomes common.
Appearances
Dragon Quest III
The Mage and Sage both learn Sap at level 8 and Kasap at level 18. The Orochi sword when used as an item in battle emulates the effect of Sap.
Dragon Quest IV
Borya and Maya both learn this spell at level 5. It costs 3 MP to cast.

Dragon Quest VI
Sap is already known by Ashlynn upon joining the party, and is learned by the hero at level 7. No other characters can obtain this spell. It costs 3 MP to cast.
Dragon Quest VII
Sap costs 3 MP to cast. Maribel learns it at level 4, Mages learn it at level 4 also, and LizardMan learns it at level 2.
Dragon Quest VIII
Jessica Albert already knows the Sap spell upon joining the party. It costs 3 MP for her to cast it.
Dragon Quest IX
Sap is learned by mages at level 7 and armamentalists at level 5. It costs 2 MP to cast, and will improve in accuracy once the caster's magical might reaches 50. Once the stat value surpasses 999, the spell will become 100% accurate barring monster resistance.
