The auroral helm is the bascinet of the Erdrick Equipment, granting the wearer incredible defence on top of super-charging their voltage output.
The auroral helm has appeared in illustrations of Erdrick's armour as early as 1987 and appeared in games under the name of Erdrick's helm, but no version of the helm would appear in any iteration of the third game game until the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III in 2024. It's appearance within said title and the method of obtaining it confirm the longstanding fan theory that Ortega's helm was incorporated into the legendary armour set after the events of the game.

The helm is obtained by giving the Zenithium ore to the dwarf who travelled alongside Ortega years prior to the events of the game. The player is first made aware of the ore when speaking to the reformed robbin' 'oodlums in Quagmire Cave, and it's location is deep within Gaia's Navel. Taking the Zenithium to the dwarf triggers a cutscene that results in the little man reforging the battered helm he made for his comrade many years ago, replacing it with the auroral helm. Note that while the new helmet loses the status ailment protection granted by the original, this can be mitigated by equipping any of the several newly added accessories.
