From Dragon Quest Wiki

Sabrecats appear in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, and have yet to make subsequent appearances.

The ancestors of the Great sabrecats both figuratively and literally, Sabrecats resemble the smilodons of the real world Plestiocene era and the mane-less Tsavo lions.
