Fizzle

From Dragon Quest Wiki

Fizzle is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series.

Introduced in the original game, it is a spell that attempts to seal the spells of the target/targets, preventing them from casting magic.

Interestingly Fizzle does not prevent those afflicted from being able to speak, as is the case with instances of spell-sealing seen in other media. This can be seen during the in-battle Party Chat seen in the PSX version of VII.

Localization History[edit]

The original Japanese versions of the Monsters: Joker spinoffs introduced a single-target spell by the name of Mahotomu and continued to use the name Mahotōn for the multi-target spell. The English localization team decided to use the name Fizzle for the new single-target spell in the games, while using the new name Kafizzle for the original spell, which always affected a group of enemies. This practice has become standard for games the feature both spells.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest[edit]

Fizzle is learned by the Hero at level 10. It costs 2 MP to use it against an enemy, and it stops them from casting spells. Like with other spells in the original title, Fizzle uses a resistance table based on 16; I.E. 1 in 16 to hit, 2 in 16, and so on. Due to the way the game's calculations are programmed, no enemies are fully immune to Fizzle, with its odds of working bottoming out at 1/16. Some enemies, such as Scorpions, will not be affected, because they do not have any spells.

The enemies drohl diabolist, scarewolf, knight errant, and the first form of the Dragonlord can use this spell against the player. Enemy Fizzle spells have a 50/50 chance of working each time the spell is cast. If the Hero is wearing Erdrick's Armour, enemy Fizzle spells will always fail against him.

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

The Prince of Cannock learns Fizzle at level 8.

The enemies gargoyle, grimlin, hawk man, miasma, smog, shaman, sorcerer, and treevil can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

The Hero learns Fizzle at level 18, and Priests and Sages learn it at level 13. It can also be cast by using the Staff of antimagic and Staff of Rain during battle.

The enemies leger-de-man, abracadabrer, bag o' laughs, vampire cat, vladdy, vladiator, infanticore, and hoodlum can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Fizzle is learned by Kiryl at level 13.

The enemies venus guytrap, sand viper, flyguy, cheater cheetah, demonspawn, prince of darkness, and (in the remakes) knightshade and perilwinkle can use this spell against the party.

The enemies silencing ram, battering ram, marrow escapee, goodybag, hirsute hexer, gryphon, tormentaur, and merking use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Fizzle is learned at the fourth rank in the Priest vocation after 50 battles and the Malevolantern class after 1 battle. It costs 3 MP to cast.

It can be cast by the enemies perilwinkle, disastropod, necromacer, scargoyle, axassin, knightshade, shaman, envoy, numpton, malign vine, captain catastrophe, and gasputin.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Fizzle is learned by Angelo after investing 6 points into his "Staff" skill, as well as the Eight after investing 40 points into his "Courage" skill.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Fizzle is learned by Armamentalists at level 14. It costs 3 MP to cast, and targets a group of enemies.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Fizzle is learned by Mages at level 18 and Druids at level 59, costing 3 MP to cast. Its chance of success is dependent on either the caster's Magical Might or Magical Mending, whichever happens to be higher.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Veronica and Serena will learn Fizzle at levels 13 and 15, respectively.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Called StopSpell in this game, this ability can be learned by various monsters. It requires the monster to be at least level 9, with at least 44 MP, and 38 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the CatFly, Centasaur, Crestpent, DarkHorn, FaceTree, Gremlin, JewelBag and Snapper among others.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

StopSpell now requires 69 Intelligence to learn.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

It is learned through the Antimagician, Cheesy Grin, Dark Artist, Dragonlord, Grump, Heavenly Herald, Jasper Unbound, Materialist, Mouth Guard, Nature Child, Protector, and Smarty-Pants talents.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

Although the spell is not usable by any of the playable heroes, certain monsters are able to cast Fizzle such as Gargoyles and Hocus chimaeras. In this entry, the Seal status effect will prevent characters from using either spells or skills.

Dragon Quest Builders[edit]

The Dragonlord will cast Fizzle frequently during the first phase of the final battle, preventing the Builder from using items for several moments unless he or she is wearing the Auroral armor.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

Fizzle stops one enemy from using magic for 4 MP, and can be learned by drackolytes and valhalla vultures.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Fizzle is known naturally by crème caraslime, king slime, and magic marionette at level 1 and can be learned by bag o' laughs and stump chump at level 16. It costs 8 MP to cast, has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction, and has a 40% chance to lock away a single target's spells for three turns. Fizzle can be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.
