- Although water-themed spells such as Maelstrom have appeared before in the series, they are typically categorized as wind or ice spells depending on the game.
- Splish's Japanese name Zaba (ザバ) is an onomatopoetic word for the sound of water splashing. It can also be written as ざば. This is also the origin of Geyzer's Japanese name, Zaban.
