The Merking is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VI. It is a stronger and bulkier variant of a Merman that wields a polearm.
Characteristics[edit]
Merkings are bulky mermen that have grown larger fins and more musculature than their ordinary counterparts. In their hands, they wield unusual tridents with a crescent-moon shaped head which they flail wildly about in battle. With its magic, it is capable of freezing parties of adventurers with its Crackle spell and seal away their spells with Fizzle. They are also capable of spewing forth venomous vapors that can envenom their enemies. Although the merking shares the same name as the Merking in both English and Japanese, the kind that appear in VI have a similar appearance to the Dread Fiend Gracos. In the next game, a similar monster named Merderer essentially replaced this merking, having a near identical appearance and combat abilities. Years later, the merking from VI made a reappearance in Monsters: Super Light wielding a trident with a different design.
