The Great Pit of Giaga is a key location in the overworld of Dragon Quest III.

The cave is on an island to the right of the Necrogond Shrine

It is only accessible via Ramia, and serves as the sole connection between the Hero's world and the underworld.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Before defeating Baramos, the pit is guarded by two men and completely surrounded by a wall. This prevents anyone from entering the pit.

After the defeat of Baramos, the pit has been enlarged by Zoma's minions in preparation to raid the overworld. Only one of the guards is still alive and the pit is now easily accessible, allowing entrance into the Underworld.

Nearby monsters[edit]

Remakes[edit]

  • Prior to Baramos' defeat, a guard informs the Hero and party that confusion can be cured by striking the inflicted ally. The Cell phone port ironically keeps this advise even with the mechanic removed.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]

The pit's walls now include the same colossal statues seen in the Maw of the Necrogond. The walls are destroyed when Zoma enters the world to make his declaration of war in Aliahan, leaving an impenetrable miasma lingering in the pit. This can only be cleared by the Sphere of Light, meaning the player must speak with the Dragon Queen before entering the underworld and prevents the player from facing Zoma without the crucial gem.

When the Hero and the party leap into the pit a cutscene will play showing their descent, based on the opening of the Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection released in 2011. During the end credits the pit is still shown to be open despite what the in-game text implies upon Zoma's defeat, with the minister of the Necrogond Shrine and the lone remaining guard looking over the abyss.

The guard who in previous ports informs the party that they can attack one another to cure confusion mentions it can be done with the Angel bell in place of the removed game mechanic.

Cleft between worlds[edit]

The nature of the pit is alluded to in the finale of Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, when Ramia escorts the Scions of Erdrick to the world of their ancestor by flying them into a dimensional portal high in the sky. The pit of Giaga houses such a dimensional portal within its depths that connects to the open sky of the "underworld", creating the in-universe misconception that the two dimensions are physically linked in a hollow earth or celestial spheres arrangement of stratum on a cosmic scale.
