The Overworld is the world map used for a large portion of Dragon Quest III. It is connected to the underwolrd through the Great Pit of Giaga. An astronomer in Lozamii notes the world is a sphere that moves through space, but the southern and northern edges of the map still link to each-other instead functioning like a proper sphere as a gameplay conceit.
Geography[edit]
The map is a close approximation of of Earth, with many regions and kingdoms drawing parallel to the real world (Romaria~Rome, Jipang~Japan, etc). The only exception is the continent containing Aliahan which is the hero's origin and starting point in Dragon Quest III.
The setting of Dragon Quest III roughly corresponds to the Age of Exploration of the 15th century, with the references to the colonization of the new world, the spice trade of the near east, and the first contact that Japan had with the West, among other instances.
Connection to the underworld[edit]
The connection between the overworld and the underworld is explained in the finale of Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake, when Ramia escorts the Scions of Erdrick to the world of their ancestor by flying them into a dimensional portal high in their world's sky. The pit of Giaga houses such a dimensional portal within its depths that connects to the open sky of the "underworld", creating the in-game misconception that the two dimensions are physically linked in a hollow earth or celestial spheres arrangement of stratum on a cosmic scale.
