The Void

"Before Yggdrasil fell, departed souls would come here before returning to the World Tree.

But now that the Tree is gone, it is a place with an entrance but no exit. A dead end for the dead. A spiritual cul-de-sac."

—Grand Master Pang

The Void is a purgatory-like location in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

After Mordegon's destruction of Yggdrasil, the cycle of souls was interrupted, turning what was a temporary stop on the path to reincarnation into a dismal final destination. Souls trapped in the Void would eventually be lost forever, until only the Lord of Shadows was left.

Grand Master Pang found herself here after sacrificing her life to set up a protective barrier around Angri-La. Her former student Rab, and later the Hero, were able to visit the Void without dying through intense meditation and the ritual assistance of the High Lama respectively, and received special training from the lingering spirit of Pang. Mordegon was also able to intrude upon the Void with enormous tentacles.

Apart from the roiling dark purple sky, the portion of the Void in which Rab is trained by Grand Master Pang is a perfect recreation of Angri-La's Field of Discipline, right down to the stone proclaiming Erdwin and Morcant's friendship.
