Title | Explosive Orb |
Bombs are a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series. It appears in Dragon Quest Tact as part of a collaboration event with War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. They are levitating spherical monsters shaped like fireballs with a tendency to self-destruct in battle.
Characteristics[edit]
Bombs are anthropomorphic red-orange fireballs with a tiny pair of arms that float in battle. They often have yellow or red eyes and display a jagged, toothy grin. Their design has not changed much over the years, but in some games such as Final Fantasy XII, the bombs have a fuse-like appendage on the tops of their heads, befitting their name. They typically attack by biting, ramming their bodies, and casting fire magic, and will sacrifice themselves with Self-Destruct after they have taken enough damage to inflict heavy non-elemental damage to a single character. In some games, bombs will expand or grow larger each time they are hit, usually exploding after they have grown larger enough times.
From their original appearance, there have also been several variants of bombs, including the Grenade, which are often colored grey or blue and is sometimes differentiated by being an ice-elemental monster instead. Other variants include the Balloon and the Purobolos. There is also a much stronger variant, known as the King Bomb or Bomb King, which has appeared as a boss in various games. It typically forgoes the usage of Self-Destruct in favor of other powerful attacks and abilities.
Appearances[edit]
Final Fantasy series[edit]
Bombs made their first appearance in the 1988 game Final Fantasy II on the Famicom, along with its differently-colored variants Balloon, Grenade, and Mine. They will use their signature Self-Destruct ability on a single character after taking some damage, making them a nuisance to battle. In Final Fantasy IV, bombs have a small chance to drop an item after being defeated that teaches the summoner Rydia how to summon a Bomb in battle.
