An old man from Persistence arrived in a field in hopes of making a town, but needs a merchant to help. The Hero 3 agrees to provide him with one and parts way with his companion--this leads to a permanent separation in the NES version and a temporary farewell in the remakes of the game. The game will now notify the player each time the boom town upgrades, and there is goodybag disguised as a Merchant going for a stroll at night. When speaking to the Merchant, he or she will now reflect on when the townspeople revolted and a cutscene showing the events plays out. During the ending the town is shown to be thriving, with several citizens holding a meeting in the Merchant's former mansion.

The Immigrant Town is a town that can be created by the player in Dragon Quest III in the field at the north eastern tip of the North American continent and on the other side of mountains east of Persistence.

The development of the town is necessary to obtain the yellow orb.

Synopsis[edit]

An old man from Persistence built himself a cottage in a field near the eastern coast of the continent and dreams of making a town, but needs a Merchant to help. The Hero agrees to provide him with one and parts way with his companion―this leads to a permanent separation in the NES version and a temporary farewell in the remakes of the game.

The turbulent development of the immigrant town reflects the near-disaster of the Jamestown colony, the first permanent English settlement on American soil.

Stages of development[edit]

Stage One[edit]

The Merchant has built a shop and runs it.

Stage Four[edit]

Originally the Final Stage in the NES version. This is triggered by visiting the jail at night in Stage Three and overhearing the revolution conspirators. Though in the NES version, leaving town during the Third Stage and returning triggered the change. Changes included:

 • The Merchant being jailed.
 • The weapon and armour shop getting new merchandise. The item shop and inn remain the same.
 • The cabaret club has been replaced with the Little Stars theater for gifted children, and is holding a children's singing contest. The alcohol served at the bar has been swapped out for kid-friendly sodas.
 • A toughie will mention the island of Lanson and assert that it is the home of the blue orb
 • A Troubadour sings of the forlorn Necrogrond cloistered high in the mountains, lamenting that it is the home of the silver orb and is all but unreachable to mortalkind now.

Final Stage (Remakes only)[edit]

This is triggered when the Hero and party awaken Ramia and the changes include:

 • The Merchant is temporarily reinstalled as mayor after reflecting on how things went wrong and abdicates his position after choosing a trustworthy successor, then returns to Patty's Party Planning Place.
 • The rude guards have been replaced with more polite staff and the jail has been demolished to build a home for a family, signifying the town has become peaceful
 • The Little Stars theater has a new child singing on stage and is now open at night, hosting a Troubadour. Alcoholic beverages are not served.
 • The old dreamer who was first here moved in with the old woman running the item shop, taking her as his wife.
 • The Merchant is out of jail and chooses someone from the town to take over as mayor. If you talk to the Merchant, they will return to Patty's Party Planning Place.

Remake changes[edit]

In addition to being let out of prison, the Super Famicom and GBC version of the game maintained the Merchant's unique sprite, whereas the NES version sees them taking the sprite of the usual town Merchant.

Usage of the Immigrant Town in another area[edit]

 • The town's theater is used in a village during the Dancer Scenario at the beginning.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit]

The game will now notify the player each time the boom town upgrades, and there is goodybag disguised as a Merchant going for a stroll at night. When speaking to the Merchant, he or she will now reflect on when the townspeople revolted and a cutscene showing the events plays out. During the ending the town is shown to be thriving, with several citizens holding a meeting in the Merchant's former mansion.
