The torch is an item used to light up dark dungeons. It is used multiple times in Dragon Quest and one specific time in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
The torch is a plot item that lights up a dark floor in Uptaten Towers. Because it's treated as a key plot item in this game, it can't be sold or thrown away.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Though torches are not used in the game as items, one is needed during a puzzle in the Shrine of Mysteries to light 9 braziers up with the right combination of red and blue flames. This puzzle, though, is only present in the Sony PlayStation Version.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Though torches are not used in the game as items, they are shown to be held by the characters while in a cavern during gameplay or cutscenes.
