"Urgh... Nera... My heart... burns for you..."

—Crispin, recovering from his misadventure at Mount Magmageddon (DS, Cell phone)

Crispin Burns is a character in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. He is a resident of Mostroferrato and childhood friend of Nera Briscoletti who participates in the contest to win Nera's hand in marriage.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Like several other supporting characters in Dragon Quest V, Crispin's design was significantly changed between the era of the original Super Famicom release and the PS2 remake, but he has consistently been portrayed as a handsome, somewhat delicate fellow with waist-length blonde hair. Crispin is portrayed in the Super Famicom and Nintendo DS versions with a generic minstrel sprite and his Super Famicom-era guidebook illustration depicts him holding a flute, but he is never described as a musician or seen performing music.

Crispin is a gentle but determined young man. He has resided in Mostroferrato since childhood, and has known Nera and her sister Debora for many years. He has long been in love with Nera and hopes to marry her. For her part, Nera is aware of his affections and cares about him a great deal, but sees him more as an older brother figure. Crispin and Debora are considerably less fond of each other; Debora claims to have used Crispin as a lackey when they were children, similar to Prince Harry's treatment of the young Hero, and she is unenthusiastic about the prospect of him marrying her sister.

Story[edit]

Upon the Hero and party's first arrival to Mostroferrato, he lives with his parents. The two meet at the Briscoletti residence to learn that Rodrigo Briscoletti is offering Nera's hand in marriage to whomever can retrieve both the Circle of Fire and Water. Though the Zenithian shield is also promised to the winner, Crispin cares only for the opportunity to wed Nera.

Crispin is badly injured at Mount Magmageddon and is unable to continue with the trials, but notably he still seems to have been the most successful participant apart from the Hero. After his injury, Nera stays by his bedside until the bride choice.

If the Hero marries Nera, then Crispin will resolve to try harder to become a better man, and is married to a dancer named Ashlee in Generation III. Unusually, he and his wife live in the Briscolettis' villa rather than at Crispin's parents' home.

If the Hero chooses not to marry Nera, Crispin later undertakes the trials a second time and succeeds. By Generation III, he has married Nera and the couple can likewise be found living in the Briscolettis' villa.
