The salamarauder is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is a stronger, pale variant of the Wooper trooper.

Characteristics

Like wooper troopers, salamarauders are small amphibian warriors based off the axolotl, their paler complexion making them more reminiscent of the real-life animal. They wear simple blue tabards and horned helmets on their heads. The salamarauders can dodge attacks and redirect them in much the same way as their blue brethren, and can also breathe cool breath and block attacks with their shield.

Etymology

The salamarauder, along with the rest of its wooper variants, are based on the axolotl, an endangered species of salamander from Mexico. The name wooper itself references the term "wooper looper" (ウーパールーパー, Ūpārūpā), a term introduced by the Nissin Foods company to refer to their axolotl mascot, which appeared in a 1985 commercial.
