Kon the Knight is a character and boss in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
He is a member of the Order of Zugzwang, and serves as one of the cult's main enforcers along with Slon the Rook. He has gone on to make regular appearances in spinoff games in the series.
Characteristics
Kon is a white, muscular anthropomorphic horse covered in scales. Depending on the game, his mane and long tail are either dark red or magenta and he has hooves for hands and feet. He often speaks in horse-related puns and is capable of casting powerful spells in battle. Slon and Kon are based respectively on Ox-Head and Horse-Face, two beings from Chinese mythology that are said to be the guardians of the underworld and are first encountered by a dead soul that enters the underworld. They possess the bodies of men and the heads of beasts. In Japanese mythology, Ox-Head and Horse-Face are known as "Gozu" and "Mezu" respectively.
Story
Kon, along with Slon, shows up in the Ancient Ruins to defeat Pankraz. They are easily defeated by the enraged father, but brutalize the man when Ladja blackmails him with the threat of killing his son.
Years later, Kon orchestrates the kidnapping of The Hero's wife with the help of Chancellor Jeeves of Gotha. Located at his hideout in Knightmare Towers, the fully grown Hero shows up to rescue his wife and eliminates the conspiring chancellor along with the tower's defenses. While his pawns fail to vanquish The Hero, Kon is fully confident in his own abilities, mainly because he has a shield that makes him nearly invincible. Indeed, Kon has the upper hand in the first part of their battle as The Hero is barely able to inflict any damage onto him. However, in the midst of his gloating, The Hero's wife unexpectedly emits a light that dissolves the barrier, making him vulnerable.
Upon his defeat, Kon is baffled by what The Hero's wife managed to do to him and what it entails. In the originals, Kon will reveal to The Hero's wife that she is a descendant of The Original Legendary Hero and, with his dying breath, turn her and The Hero to stone. In the remakes, Kon will instead call out to Bishop Ladja before dying. Ladja will then show up and reveal The Hero's wife her bloodline before turning the two into stone.

Quotes
- If spoken to before wife:
- "There is no necessity for galloping to your death. First I permission you for speaking some words of farewell at your beloved wife."
- "Enough horsing around! King of country must think foremost of his peoples, not of his own selfish wishings. And yet you come here! For this alone, you deserve to be put down. Whinny-he-he! Now! It is time for you both to saddle up for death!"
Remake alterations
In the Super Famicom version, Kon is the one who cursed The Hero and his wife to be trapped in stone before succumbing to his wounds after his defeat. The Sony PlayStation 2 & Nintendo DS versions have Ladja showing up to do the deed.

Kon is the English spelling of конь, being the Russian word for the knight piece in chess.
Trivia
- If the player grinds enough to defeat Kon in the first phase of the battle before the wife breaks down the barrier, the events will proceed as if the player defeated Kon as normal, with him commenting on the wife's powers to break his barrier even though it technically didn't happen.
