Bounce is a recurring spell throughout the Dragon Quest series. It protects the caster from enemy attack spells, not by reducing their strength, but by throwing them back at the caster. The barrier is conjured up for 4 MP, and will last 6~9 turns. Among the items that can emulate its effect includes the Zenithian shield.

It must be noted that Bounce reflects all spells targeting the caster with only a select few exceptions; beneficial spells will be sent back to their conjurer as well as harmful ones. Self-targeting magic still takes affect, however, as well as Insulatle, Kaclang, Bazoom, and Magic Barrier.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Bounce is learned by Mages & Sages at Level 24. The spell costs 8 MP to cast in its original appearance.

The enemies Franticore, Hocus chimaera, Wyrtoise, and Zoma use this spell on themselves.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Bounce is learned by Borya at level 9.

The enemies Peeper, Rhinocerex, Beleth, Div (in the remakes), Aamon, and Psaro the Manslayer in his seventh form can use this spell on themselves.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Name Level
Magic marionette 6
Old man of the sea 6
Barbatos 7
Bomboulder 8
Bianca 18
Nera 18
Debora 20
Daughter 27
Conkuisitor 30

Wyrtoise, Kon the Knight, Mechan-o'-wyrm, Wrecktor, Necromancer, Ladja, King Korol, and Nimzo's second form use this spell as enemies.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Bounce can only be obtained by mastering the Mage vocation.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Bounce can be learned at rank 1 as an Armamentalist or rank 5 as a Delusionist. The Rippled rapier can also cast Bounce when used as a tool in battle.

  • In remake versions, it can also be learned at rank 1 as a Hero.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Bounce can be learned by Jessica and Angelo by investing points (21 and 9 respectively) into the Staff skill.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Bounce (DS)
MP 4
Effect Reflects all spells cast by the enemy that target the caster of Bounce.
Flavor text Forms a protective barrier that reflects all enemy spells.

Important things to remember:

  • Breaths, particle beams, etc. are not reflected by Bounce.
  • Reflected spells use the reflecting player/enemy's Magical Might rather than the original caster's.
  • Multiple-target spells such as the Bang series are reflected on a per-hit basis. If only your Mage has Bounce up, the rest of the party will still be hit by the spell; if everyone has Bounce or Magic Mirror up, the entire spell will be returned to its caster.

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Veronica and Rab will learn Bounce at level 27 and 23, respectively, and can cast it for 6 MP. The spell no longer reflects party member magic, making it much more user-friendly, and also fails to block the Rubblerouser line of spells as well. Presumably this is because that line affects the ground directly beneath the target rather than the person in question.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Bound will grow into Bounce when the monster reaches level 20 with 84 max MP and 78 INT.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

Bounce now requires 141 INT to learn.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Bounce can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Bounce can be learned from all the skills it could be previously, but Antimagic now requires 35 points, and Materialist requires 46 points.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

Dragon Quest Tact

Bounce is currently an enemy-only spell that can be cast by certain monsters and bosses in high-level stages. It has a range of up to two squares away from the caster, can be self-cast, and grants a barrier that reflects spells for three turns.

Wyrtoise can learn the perk Rare Bounce through Talent Blossoming, while Nimzo learns it when he is fully awakened. It grants them a 20% chance to activate Bounce at the start of each action. Psaro the Manslayer, Old King Mortamor, and Santa Alena possess the perk Instant Bounce, which activates Bounce at the start of battle for three turns. Maldragora the Worldmaker can learn it with 10 awakening points, while Slimecicle and Wulfspade can learn it through Talent Blossoming or their character builder respectively. Alphyn can learn the perk Instant Spell Reflect with 10 awakening points, which activates Bounce at battle start for two turns. Famed Schleiman Tank and King Godwyn's True Form can learn the perk Spell Reflect Shield with 30 awakening points, which activates Bounce at battle start for two turns. Omega also possess the perk Heartless One, which grants it Bounce and increases its evasion for three turns at battle start.
