The Gloomy grublin is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first introduced in Dragon Quest XI. It is a swordwielding humanoid creature that looks like a goblin.

Characteristics

Gloomy grublins are small blue-skinned humanoid monsters that are about the size of children. They have round heads with squat black noses, a huge pair of ears, and a tiny pair of horns on top of their heads. Their meager equipment consists of a chipped copper sword and a small copper fauld worn over a small kilt made of rags around their waists. These grublins are cowardly creatures and have a tendency to flee at the first sign of trouble.

Etymology

The gloomy grublin's Japanese name, メソコボルト (Mesokoboruto) is a combination of the word mesomeso, which is an onomatopoeia for sobbing, and kobold, a race of mischievous elves or goblins from German folklore.
