"Whatever you do in life, make sure you're winning."
—Terry, in Haggleton (DS, Cell phone)
Terry is a character in the Dragon Quest series that appears as a playable party member and boss in Dragon Quest VI.
He is a brash, arrogant swordsman who is encountered several times throughout the story, beating the party to various goals and reaping the rewards for himself before joining the Hero's party later in the game. As a child, Terry was the main character of Dragon Quest Monsters.
Appearance and personalityEdit
Terry wears a blue cap to cover his white hair, a blue tunic with matching gloves over a black undershirt, and white pants capped with black boots. The tunic is partially covered with a section of Leather armour, and he carries a satchel at his side.
Terry is the archetypal "lone wolf" in that he prefers to work alone and hates to depend on others. While he is not strictly anti-social, Terry is very condescending towards others and speaks in a terse manner. This bellicose attitude stems from his profound (and well hidden) loneliness, as shown in his Lucky Dip antics. That being said, he is still a good person at heart and is strongly implied to have saved several people from the jaws of monsters during his travels, most notably Donna the barmaid from Port Haven.
As a child, Terry is much more kind and social. Throughout his journey in the Kingdom of GreatTree, Terry is always willing to help those in need. Unlike his older counterpart, Terry is eager to and willing to make friends with his companions and rivals. In addition, Terry helps others out of kindness and compassion, rather than any thoughts of rewards and making a name for himself like his adult self would do.

In the Cell phone version, Terry joins at level 33 having mastered the Priest and Mage Vocation in addition to those listed above.
Lucky Dip anticsEdit
Terry notably has some of the most useful Lucky Dip actions in the game, potentially using Lightning Storm once he reaches rank 8.
Rank | Antic |
---|---|
1 | Terry puts his hair back in order! |
2 | Terry smiles suggestively! |
3 | Terry throws a coin into the air!
The coin lands right in Terry's palm! Terry cracks a smile! |
4 | Terry begins singing to himself!
"Laaa la laaa..." The enemy listens intensely to the song! The enemy is lost in Terry's sweet voice. |
5 | Terry stares into the distance, a conceited smile on his face. But it's just an act to cover his profound loneliness!
"Ugh!" |
6 | Terry taps his feet to the rhythm of the battle! What a tap dancer! Now he's harder to hit! |
7 | Terry performs a sword dance, a rose clasped in his teeth! His blade grazes the enemy! |
8 | Terry tries to remember some of the games that Dhuran taught him long ago.
"You must become stronger. Understand?" Dhuran's words echo in his mind! Terry lets out a primal roar! Lightning courses through Terry's body! |

Remake changesEdit
- In the Super Famicom Version, Terry had a base 1⁄16 (6.25%) chance to dodge physical strikes before his Agility was factored in. This would stack with whatever evasive equipment or vocation benefits he possessed.
- In the cell phone version, Terry received +5 to his Strength and +38 to his Agility at level 33. This raises his Level 99 Strength and Agility to 335 and 288, respectively.

EtymologyEdit
Terry is a name of Germanic origin, and means people's ruler. It is derived from the older name Theodoric.
TriviaEdit
- Terry's design is based on the concept art for the Hero, who was initially designed to be shadier and more arrogant-looking than his predecessors. Terry's smug attitude is reflective of this initial design intent.
- Terry is the only character to speak with an American accent in Dragon Quest Heroes. This is owing to his voice actor being a native of Virginia before moving to the UK.
- Terry gets a color palette reference for one of the 8 costumes for the Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Said palette is given to the base of Hero.
