Purgatory Island

Purgatory Island is a major location in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a prison island west of Trodain Castle and southeast of the Savella Region.

After defeating Sir Leopold and being falsely arrested for the attempted murder of the Lord High Priest, The Hero, Yangus, Jessica and Angelo, along with High Priest Rolo were sentenced to a lifetime at Purgatory Island. They learn upon meeting other prisoners that those sentenced there can only leave through death. Through the time spent here, Rolo comes to repent for his lust of power, as well as regret for sentencing others before him to the prison.

After a month passed, both The Party and Rolo learnt of the Lord High Priest passing away with a suspicion of the one who is responsible for his death. This news prompted them to plan a breakout with Rolo claiming to have swallowed a Gold rosary to prevent anyone from stealing it. The guards having fallen for it came to check on him, only for The Party to knock them out, though Rolo realizes that he has to stay behind in order for The Party to escape.

The Hero and Party make it out and are reunited with Trode and Medea.

Rolo, himself, is later freed after the defeat of Rhapthorne and becomes the new Lord High Priest.

Remake

Both changes are included in the Nintendo 3DS Version of the game.

• After Rolo prays to the Goddess for himself, The Party and The Lord High Priest, a flashback is shown as The Hero recalls when he was found by Medea and Trode through the actions of Munchie.
• Previous versions of the game suggested that Trode and Medea found The Party by luck as they continued traveling on their own. The 3DS Version has them being found by Red and Morrie (the later is present if recruited) who have managed to avoid arrest (even if either are present in fighting Sir Leopold.
