Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
In ages before the events of the game, the ice witch Krystalinda was locked away in a book for her crimes and Jörmun was assigned to be a living seal for her power. As long as he lived, Krystalinda's magic would not return to her and she would be too feeble to break free of her prison on her own. Sometime just prior to the first act of the game, Jasper discovers the book that contains Krystalinda and strikes a bargain with her to set a trap for the Hero and his allies. The witch is freed by Jasper but still lacks the lion's share of her sorcery: she freezes the people of Sniflheim solid and seals the fledgling Queen Frysabel in her old prison in order to take her place and trick the party into defeating Jörmun for her.
The party falls for the ruse and encounter Hendrik battling the beast in the depths of the Hekswood. The knight is defeated and Jörmun attacks the Luminary after assuming he is Hendrik's ally, and he is slain in the proceeding battle. Krystalinda regains her magic upon his passing, and is later confronted in the royal Sniflheim halls.
During the third act of the game, Jörmun is revived by the resurrection of the incarnation of evil and begins rampaging throughout the north while under the fiend's influence. He can be confronted once again and, if he is defeated by the Hero using one of the Zap spells, Jörmun will return to normal. His defeat under these conditions are a part of the Cobblestone fortification sidequest, where in he will agree to keep an eye on the village as a kind of watch dog from the surrounding cliffs.

Etymology
- Jörmun is derived from Jörmungandr, the world serpent of Norse folklore who encircles all of Midgard with his coils. The snake was an adversary of the god Thor, and the two would kill one another during the Ragnarok.
- The monster's Japanese name, Munbaba, is a combination of the Babylonian monster Hunbaba and the species' recurring Mu syllable.
