It can only be found by unlocking a door in the East side of Cantlin/Mercado, and speaking to one of the merchants. The Silver Shield is the most expensive item in the game. Due to text restrictions in the Gameboy Color remake of Dragon Quest, Silver Shield was renamed Silver with a picture of a shield next to it.
Dragon Quest III
Silver shields can be bought for 8,800 gold at Samanao, Kol, and Rimuldar and sold for 6,600 gold. They have a defense bonus of +30. Heroes, Soldiers, Pilgrims, and Sages can equip them.
Dragon Quest V
The silver shield has a defence bonus of +55, and protects against magical and fire attacks. They can be bought for 33,000 gold. Hero, the Hero's Son, and the Hero's Daughter can equip it.
Dragon Quest VI
Dragon Quest VII
Silver shields can be bought for 33,000 gold and sold for 16,500 gold. They have a defense bonus of +50. Hero, Maribel, Kiefer, Gabo, Melvin, and Aira can equip it. By equipping one, 25HP damage is taken away from all ice and fire attack skills used on the equipper.
Dragon Quest VIII
The silver shield offers a defense bonus of +48. It can be equipped by the Hero, Yangus, and Angelo.

Captain N: The Game Master
In the episode "The Trojan Dragon", both the Flame Silver shield & Flame sword are both in a cave, and guarded by an Axe knight until Captain N defeats it.
