The Gobbler is a boss in the game Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past faced in the Tunnel to the Alltrades Abbey.
Story[edit]
The Gobbler disguises itself as Nava in order to force Zev to take up the Soulstealer against Eustace. The party and their companions begin to have their suspicions when they return to Precipice Pass from the Dungeon of Descent after defeating the monsters Rashers and Stripes and rescuing the High Priestess Jacqueline. Zev mysteriously returns after having been taken away from monsters with no explanation and Nava seems chipper despite being her affliction and she has suddenly lost the hair clip that Eustace gave her as a gift. Maribel states that she almost seems like a completely different person and Ruff says that Nava is giving off the smell of a monster. The old chief priest is nowhere to be found in the mountain village after returning from the dungeon, either. Jacqueline asks the party if they can defeat Cardinal Sin, giving them the Alltrades Key so they can return to the abbey and reclaim it.
The group then splits up, with Eustace and Fingers taking Nava and Zev with them, even though the two are acting very strangely. Fingers tries to raise his concerns, but the fake Nava shuts him down and insists on making the trip. The thief is alarmed by her sudden change in attitude, but goes along with Eustace's plan. Eustace lets the party know where the locked door to the abbey is and says they should rendezvous there. When they reach the locked door, "Nava" asks the party if they can give her the key to the abbey, but the gig is up. Eustace has figured out that it's not actually Nava and tells her to reveal her true identity. It sheds its human disguise to reveal its hideous form and provokes Zev into using the Soulstealer on Eustace, drawing on his feelings of hatred and resentment. The monster then foolishly challenges the party to a battle, stating that it'll kill all of them and then devour High Priestess Jacqueline afterwards.

Strategy[edit]
The Gobbler's spells are tough to deal with, especially since the player can't answer in kind. The Magic vestment from the Casino can mute the damage from these spells if won and equipped. Maribel should be ready to heal with the Salvation stone and the Hero and Ruff attack normally every turn. Even without the use of magic, the Gobbler isn't that difficult a boss to beat.
