They are pieces of the infamous [[rockbomb]]s that are left behind when the boulders are bested in battle or when they self-destruct by casting [[Kamikazee]]. The rockbomb shard is a recurring item in the Dragon Quest series. They are pieces of the infamous rockbombs that are left behind when the boulders are bested in battle or when they self-destruct by casting Kamikazee. The shards retain a little bit of that explosive energy and replicate the Boom spell when used in battle.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Rockbomb shards can be purchased from item shops at Arcadia and Tryan Gully for 450 gold apiece. Naturally, they can also be dropped by Rockbombs and Bomboulders after battle. When used, they pulverize all foes for 48~96 damage. In the 3DS version, 2 rockbomb shards can be combined in the Alchemy Pot with a wizard's staff to create a magma staff.
