The Gnuriel is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VII. It is a mighty wildebeest monster that hails from the underworld.
Characteristics
Gnuriels are enormous beasts with tough grey hides that tower over their enemies. They have tiny solid red eyes, a golden pair of curved horns on their heads, and spikes all over their heads and running down their backs. With their enormous hooves, they attempt to crush adventurers underfoot and the magic beasts will also attempt to slay entire parties with their dreaded Thwack spell. When the gnuriels returned years later in X, their hides became more of a greyish shade of purple.

Dragon Quest X
Gnuriels were one of the toughest monsters that appeared in Version 1.0 of the game, possessing over 5,000 HP. In this game, it has the ability to unleash a Total War Cry and can breathe out both Dark Breath and Cursed Mist.
Etymology
The gnuriel's original name in Japanese, Death Gorgon (デスゴーゴン), references the Gorgons of Greek mythology. The most famous of which are the three sisters Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale, who were women described with venomous snakes in the place of hair and possessed the ability to turn those who beheld them into stone with their horrifying visages. The gnuriel's bestiary description in X references the myth by stating that anyone who bites into their meat is cursed with petrification.
