"The only way is up, as they say!"

—Rydon, at the top of Rydon's Tower

Rydon Kranbartle is a character in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. He is a skilled stonemason from Arcadia. He is responsible for building Rydon's Tower, an endeavor that has taken up much of his time, to his family's annoyance. Rydon is also a descendant of Alexander Kranbartle, but the sage's bloodline has long since moved on to the Albert branch of the family, and Rydon does not seem to have inherited any of his ancestor's martial or magical ability either. The modern Kranbartles are known mainly for their skill with a chisel.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Rydon is a short, balding older man with a dark tan and a generally scruffy appearance. He has a married son and a granddaughter who live in his home in Arcadia, although Rydon himself is too busy with his Tower project to get back home very often.

After Evil Jessica's attempt on his life, Master Dominico of Arcadia demands that the Hero bring him the magical Kran Spinels, which he has long coveted but is now sure he needs to survive another attack. The party visits the Kranbartle home in Arcadia, and Rydon's son explains that only his father can negotiate for the jewels, but that he is currently working at Rydon's Tower. He gives the party the stone sword, which is the key to the Tower.

The Hero, Yangus and Angelo scale Rydon's Tower and meet Rydon, who explains that the Spinels have been out of the Kranbartle family for many years and he has never personally seen them; they were used by Alexandra Kranbartle for the eyes of the statue in the Tower of Alexandra. As the party departs for another tower, Rydon remarks that he will need to build his tower even higher if they were able to climb to the top so easily.
